You can place cucumbers planted in this way anywhere, even on a balcony or on an asphalt path near a country house. A properly selected barrel will look like a decorative element for the garden. You can choose any material: wood, plastic, iron or iron with an enamel coating. But it is worth remembering that it gets very hot, so it is better not to put such a container in the open sun.

Cucumbers love a lot of light, but they should be protected from aggressive sunlight. It is best placed behind trees or buildings on the west or east side. If there are holes or cracks in the barrel, it doesn't matter. Air ingress will have a beneficial effect on the plant root system.

How to prepare seeds and what to do next

  • Before planting, the seeds are dipped in salt water for half an hour. Empty ones will float to the surface, and quality ones will sink to the bottom. Additionally, you can wrap the seeds (swollen, but not hatched) in a cloth and place them in the freezer for 48 hours (harden them), and then immediately start planting.
  • Prepare the soil, pour hot water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection. Plant 7-8 seeds in one hole at a distance of 15 cm. Remove excess shoots after germination. Sowing in a barrel can be done earlier than in open ground. After disembarking, the barrel must be covered with foil to maintain the optimum temperature.
  • Water abundantly and regularly, but avoid oversaturation. Pour water at the root, without getting on the leaves. Regulate watering based on the weather and never water in the hot sun. This is best done in the early morning or evening.
  • Harvest daily or every other day. Do not pick off the fruits, but cut them off with scissors so as not to damage the stem. If there are deformed or spoiled cucumbers, then remove them immediately so as not to infect those growing nearby.
  • Fertilize cucumbers depending on the growth phase:

- before flowering: with urea;

- during flowering, fertilize 2 times: nitrophos with urea and organic fertilizer, for example, ash with chicken droppings;

- during the period of active growth: liquid biohumus (1 time).

  • Yellow leaves can appear as a result of a lack of light, nutrients (most often nitrogen) or moisture.
  • In case of disease or pest damage, you can use insecticides (but with caution) or use safe means:

- a concentrated solution of ground red pepper, garlic;

- a solution of laundry or baby soap.
