How to feed tomatoes so that they taste sweet

  • Dec 13, 2020

Tomatoes acquire a sweet taste not so much because of their sugar content, but because of the correct balance of sugars and acids in the pulp and juice. If the summer season is rainy or dry, the gardener runs the risk of harvesting sour tomatoes. To avoid this, you can stimulate the accumulation of sugars in fruits with the help of dressings.

Factors affecting sweetness

The sweetness of tomato depends on the content of glucose and fructose in dry matter. There must also be a balance with the concentration of acids. The accumulation of sugars depends on the characteristics of the variety, the heat of the sun and the number of fine days, the acidity of the soil, the frequency of watering, and the formation of bushes. Timely feeding also helps to grow a tasty crop. Most of all, the culture needs nutrition during the budding period, after the formation of ovaries and at the stage of fruit pouring. Top dressing can improve sugar content to a certain level, which is determined by the genetics of the vegetable. Smaller, mid-ripening and late-ripening, pink and black varieties of tomatoes are considered sweeter.

Types of fertilizing substances

Tomatoes need enough potassium and phosphorus, but nitrogen needs to be limited, as it makes the vegetable sour and watery. Potassium chloride and all chloride preparations are also contraindicated in culture. Top dressing of tomatoes for a sweet taste of fruits is necessary every 2 weeks, combining the foliar and sub-root schemes.

Minerals

Several substances can be used as mineral fertilizers that will help improve the taste of tomatoes:

  • Superphosphate as a source of phosphorus. Its solution is used for watering and spraying leaves. Dissolve granules or powder in a small amount of water and leave for a day. Potassium sulfate or nitrate can also be added to it.
  • Potassium nitrate. Used for root feeding by dissolving the powder in water. A month before harvesting the fruit, it is stopped.
  • Potassium sulfate. The substance is dissolved in water, then superphosphate or wood ash is added to the mixture.
  • Potassium monophosphate. Contains both phosphorus and potassium. Granules dissolved in water are mainly used, since the powder dissolves much worse.
  • Diammofosk. In addition to phosphorus and potassium, it contains nitrogen. The substance must be applied in the spring to the planting hole, and then watered abundantly. If in the future the summer is not rainy and cool, then additional phosphorus-potassium dressings will not be required.
  • Magnesium sulfate. The drug has a positive effect on the process of photosynthesis. The solution is used to spray the bushes several times a season. If the tomatoes grow in a greenhouse, or the summer has been rainy, it is recommended to apply fertilizer every 14 days.
  • Humates. Used for root top dressing, before adding the substance, the bushes are watered abundantly.

Organic matter

The most useful organic matter for tomatoes is wood ash, since it contains potassium, magnesium and calcium. The ash is poured with boiling water, insisted for 24 hours and poured over the tomatoes at the root. The procedure must be repeated at least 3 times at intervals of 2 weeks. Green infusion is also used. For this, herbs, in addition to poisonous, are crushed, poured with water and allowed to brew for 7 days in the sun, and then the bushes are watered with the mixture.
