The root system of the vine is stretched to a great depth, saturating the shoots with moisture. But this happens only after the bush reaches a great height. In other cases, you need abundant watering of the grapes in the summer to stimulate its growth and development.

The productivity of the vine is influenced not only by timely moisture, but also by the introduction of nutrients, processing of the substrate and the fight against parasites. Illustration for this article is used under a standard license © ofazende.com

How to calculate the intensity of watering

The productivity of the vine is influenced not only by timely moisture, but also by the introduction of nutrients, processing of the substrate and the fight against parasites.

Some summer residents argue that abundant fruiting of a crop is possible even in the absence of watering, since it can absorb moisture from the soil. However, this only applies to adult plants that are able to form clusters without additional liquid addition. Freshly planted specimens require careful irrigation, especially in summer. During the day from 1 sq. m of area where grapes grow, more than 1.5 liters of water evaporate.

You should adhere to the following principles:

  • During the first year of life, the plants are watered more often than in subsequent years.
  • After planting, watering is performed once every 7 days. Warm liquid can be mixed with top dressing.
  • After 4 weeks, watering is done once every 2 weeks.

It is better to bring water for a new seedling into the recess dug along the perimeter of the trunk circle. The optimal volume of water is 5-15 liters. It is recommended to water the grapes in the evening using water that has been heated in the sun.

In young specimens, the root system may not extend beyond the walls of the planting hole, therefore, experts allow watering them within the recess.

In August, the intensity of watering is reduced so that the plant independently searches for moisture in the ground and begins to form strong roots. Often their length reaches 2.5 m horizontally and 14 m vertically. However, excessive development of the root system provokes damage to neighboring plants. Therefore, it is forbidden to pour the bush.

Helpful hints

In early spring, grapes need abundant watering, especially if the winter season was little snow. With the onset of autumn, water is brought in to strengthen the shrub before winter. The specificity of irrigation is selected taking into account varietal characteristics.

Early maturing varieties need moisture for the winter and two mandatory waterings in the summer. Mid-early varieties are moistened 3 times per summer (as a rule, watering is carried out in June and July, and even in early August).

Instances that begin to bear fruit late require 4 waterings (in addition to moisture for the winter). Irrigation begins in mid-May.

A mandatory factor when choosing a timing is the budding period. At this stage, the vine needs as much moisture as possible. But after the formation of buds and until the end of the flowering cycle, it is forbidden to irrigate the bushes. Otherwise, the inflorescences will begin to fall off.

Additional moisture is required after flowering and at the stage of fruit ripening. Watering after harvest is not recommended as it can cause the bark to crack.
