So, first you need to saturate the nuts with moisture and at the same time remove the resin from their surface in order to facilitate further germination. To do this, we soak the nuts in water for at least a day (experts recommend it for three), changing the water and my seed material. The color of the water makes it clear how much resin is washed off from the cedar grains.

During soaking, full-fledged nuts will settle to the bottom - this will be our seed fund. It needs to be put in jars and left to stratify in the refrigerator if you didn't have time to plant seeds in the fall.

It is best to place the nuts in a screw-top jar so that no one will eat them. And you can fill it by half or no more than 2/3 of the volume. Do not forget to make small holes in the lid with something sharp (a knife or a nail) - the seeds must breathe.

Usually, the grains are planted in autumn, thus natural stratification occurs - they fall asleep in the cold, and wake up and germinate in spring. But, if the autumn planting did not take place for some reason, this is not scary - we leave the seeds in a cold place until spring, and with the onset of warm days we plant them in a prepared area.

Another nuance - even after passing through stratification, not all seeds germinate and not simultaneously. From about 100 grains, 20-30 sprouts will sprout. This is considered a completely normal indicator of germination.

The process of germination of cedar seeds is interesting. First, the root breaks through, and only then the outward growth begins. Moreover, the sprout appears with a "cap" - this is the shell of a nut that comes out of the ground.

Tender sprouts need protection from birds - they can be pecked quickly and easily. Therefore, it is necessary to think over how and with what to cover the seedlings.

Sometimes young cedars are grown from seeds not in a garden bed, but in a box. There they grow stronger within 2-3 years, and only after that they are transplanted to a permanent place. This method of obtaining seedlings allows you to preserve the root system - it is not damaged.

When replanting, try to preserve a clod of earth in which the plant grew - there are friendly microorganisms necessary for it. They increase the chances of a young plant for survival.

And one more piece of advice: plant cedars in a good mood, with good heart, then the result will always be positive.
