Good afternoon, my reader. To decorate a garden that will be green even in winter, you need to pick up evergreens. Thuja are the most suitable plants for creating hedges. They are long-lived and do not require special personal care.

Reasons for choosing thuja as an evergreen hedge
Thuja does not lose its cover throughout the year. The color of a healthy plant also remains intense even during winter. But these are not all the reasons why exactly thujas will become the perfect green fencing.
- They saturate the air with antimicrobial substances.
- Retain the snow cover.
- Protect the area from dust, dirt, wind and noise.
- Provides protection from prying eyes.
- The ability to give the fence any shape due to the original trim.
- Compatible with all ornamental plants.
- Create a peaceful environment.
Thuja, like all conifers, prefer to grow in partial shade, but with constant regular watering, they actively develop in the sun.
Thuja varieties for creating a hedge
The variety of thuja varieties that are used to create hedges is amazing. But most often the following known varieties are chosen for fencing a site:
- Brabant. Frost-resistant and unpretentious variety. With its help, a dense and tall hedge is formed, which needs to be pruned in April and August. It has active growth, and after 2-3 years the height of the wall can reach 4 m. When creating a fence, seedlings must be planted at a distance of less than a meter from each other.
- Holmstrup. The height of such a fence will not exceed 2.5 m, but it is practically impenetrable. Suitable for creating low hedges, as it grows for a very long time. It will reach its maximum height in 10 years. Seedlings are planted at a distance of 80 cm from each other and provided with regular watering.
- Emerald. It has the shape of a cone, which will allow you to create an original hedge with a maximum height of 10 m. Wind-resistant and frost-resistant variety, distinguished by its unpretentiousness.
Dwarf varieties used to create low hedges:
- Danica. Has a crown in the shape of a ball. The maximum height is 80 cm, but the diameter of the crown can reach a meter with timely pruning and regular watering.
- Little Dorrit. Crown diameter 60 cm. Height less than a meter. Ideal for northern regions, as it is highly resistant to frost.
- Hoseri. Grows up to 50 cm in height. Ideal for creating short, symbolic fences.
Planting and maintaining a hedge
Planting seedlings can be carried out both in early spring and in autumn. The distance between the seedlings depends on the thuja variety, but it should not be less than 50 cm and be more than 2 m. The seedlings need a hole 70 cm deep, the diameter of which is 10 cm larger than their earthen coma. The type of soil does not matter, but for the active development of the seedling, peat, sand and fertilizers are placed on the bottom of the hole.
The first years after planting, the area with the planted thuja needs regular weeding, loosening and watering. In the spring, the bushes are fed with special fertilizers for thuja.
In the first 2 years of their life, young seedlings are covered with awnings from the scorching sunlight when they are planted on the sunny part of the site. Root protection from frost is provided by spruce branches. The branches of young thuja are neatly tied to the trunk so that they do not break under the weight of the snow that has fallen.
In spring and autumn, the hedge needs pruning. When carrying out it, it is necessary to remove all dried branches. The crown of conifers can be formed to suit every taste, but if it is cut at the same level, then it must be adhered to every year. For trimming, a sharpened tool is used - a pruner or garden shears.
