Good afternoon, my reader. When planning planting grapes in a summer cottage, it is advisable to immediately plant it in a permanent place. However, no one is immune from mistakes or unforeseen circumstances. And, if such a need arises, then a competent approach will not only save the bush from damage (death), but also preserve its productivity.

Optimal transplant times for different climatic conditions

Autumn transplantation is recommended in the southern regions of the country. This is due to the fact that the spring-summer period there can be not only hot, but also arid. It will be difficult for a plant with a strong root system to adapt in such weather.

You can start transplanting in late September - early October, when the grapes begin to lose their foliage. During this period, sap flow in the aboveground part of the bush slows down, but an active process continues in the roots.

It will be easier for the plant to root: the ground is still warm, and the nights are cooler. Autumn rains, keeping the atmosphere humid, will also ease this process. If autumn promises to be warm and dry, then moving crops from place to place is best postponed until early November.

In the middle zone of the Russian Federation, it is recommended to transplant grapes in the spring, after the onset of heat. So that the plant has time to thoroughly root and get stronger before winter.

As a last resort, grapes can be transplanted in summer. However, the bush should be provided with sufficient moisture and shade should be arranged.

Important! The culture tolerates drought and stagnant water equally badly.

Ideal landing site

The culture will manifest itself best of all near the southern side of any capital structure (house, barn, garage). The wall, warmed by the sun during the day, will protect the plant from possible night frosts. In addition, it will be sheltered from the cold winds.

The soil should be rocky but fertile (fertilized). Good natural drainage will reduce the risk of moisture stagnation and the accumulation of unwanted salts in the soil.

Important! The vineyard does not tolerate heavy shading. It is not recommended to plant it near tall shrubs, trees, buildings.

Transplant with an earthen ball

This is the safest method for young bushes (up to 3 years old), since it causes minimal damage to the roots. In order for the culture to begin bearing fruit as early as the next season, it is important to follow the rules:

  • Watering is stopped 4-5 days before transplanting, so that the clod of earth around the roots hardens and does not fall apart.
  • The bush is carefully transferred to a previously prepared spacious pit measuring 0.6x0.6x0.6 m.
  • The landing site is watered abundantly and the soil is compacted.
  • The upper part of the bush is cut off, leaving 2 powerful sleeves, each of which has 2 shoots. Cutting points are treated with garden varnish or wood ash.

Layering method

In order not to injure the plant, you can use the layering method. To do this, the young branch is bent to the soil and buried in such a way that the leaves remain above the ground.

The place of the layering is abundantly moistened and made sure that the soil does not dry out. After 1-2 months, roots should appear on the layer.

Reference! Cuttings cut from a one-year-old vine can be rooted using the layering method. Each process must have at least 2-3 buds.

Katavlak - layering with a whole bush

This is a successful method for an old (adult) bush that is difficult to transplant without significant damage to the root system. A trench 50-60 cm deep is dug from the bush. Its direction is oriented to the place where the plant needs to be moved.

The grapes are dug so that the roots are exposed as much as possible. A bucket of humus is poured into the bottom of the trench and filled with water. Using the transshipment method, the bush is placed in a depression, after removing all the lower buds. The trench is covered with soil, leaving 2-3 developed sleeves above it. The tops of the vine are tied to a trellis.

The grape transplant procedure is complicated by the fact that the culture has a powerful root system. Inexperienced gardeners who have read the recommendations of specialists can choose the most convenient way to minimize losses.
