Good afternoon, my reader. Each type of cabbage has its own beneficial properties. In winter, this vegetable provides the body with a large amount of vitamins. In order for the forks to lie at home as long as possible, you need to follow several rules for storing it. Several factors affect the shelf life of cabbage: variety, soil, harvest time, storage method. Not every gardener follows the rules that can keep a fork fresh for up to 10 months.

Cabbage varieties with the longest shelf life
You need to start preparing for storing forks even during the selection of seeds. Not every variety can be stored unchanged for a long time. Early varieties begin to deteriorate in the fall. For long-term storage, it is better to choose mid-late and late-ripening varieties. These include:
- Dobrovolskaya;
- Gift;
- Winter storm;
- Belarusian;
- Morozko;
- Snow White;
- Stone head and some others.
These varieties are stored for up to 10 months and become even tastier every day.
Growing cabbage for storage
In winter, only properly grown cabbage does not spoil. Its condition is influenced by the composition of the soil, the weather and the fertilizers used. Basic rules for growing cabbage:
- loamy and light soils are most suitable for sowing;
- nitrogen fertilizers reduce the shelf life of forks, and potassium-phosphorus fertilizers increase;
- abundant watering leads to the formation of cracks in the heads of cabbage;
- early harvest does not allow forks to ripen, in this form they will begin to deteriorate in a couple of months.
Storage preparation
In order for the cabbage to lie as long as possible, you need to follow some harvesting rules:
- The forks are carefully selected. Only those on which there are no cracks and signs of decay can be stored for a long time.
- On the head of cabbage, be sure to leave a couple of dense sheets and part of the stump.
- Harvesting is recommended in dry weather, and then it needs to be dried for another day in a warm, ventilated room.
- Do not harvest too early. Better to wait until the air temperature is close to zero.
Causes of crop rot
Even if all storage conditions are followed, dark spots may appear on cabbage in winter. They usually symbolize two diseases - soft and gray rot.
Gray rot is formed due to a violation of moisture or frost. Having found it, the cabbage must be immediately sorted out and chalked over healthy forks.
Soft decay appears on heads of cabbage with mechanical damage and cracks. These forks should be discarded immediately. To avoid the appearance of soft rot, it is recommended to process the forks with slaked lime or chalk.
By observing these simple storage rules, the hostess will be able to preserve her harvest as long as possible.
