Gardeners are increasingly choosing this type of raspberry for planting in their country house, since berries from such shrubs can be enjoyed for a long time: from August to the first frost. But raspberry, which has a remontability, requires increased attention.
The difference between remontant raspberries and ordinary ones
Have renovation berries ripen on the branches current year. And at ordinary fruiting occurs on stems grown in Last year.
This difference led to the use of different cropping options in these two types of raspberries:
- at renovation cut off all shoots without exception;
- at ordinary raspberries leave 4-6 healthy strong branches this year to bear fruit next year.
Reasons for pruning remontant raspberries
There are some features pruning of this type of raspberry, so some difficulties may arise with it for novice gardeners.
It is possible to collect from a plant in one season 2 crops - in summer and autumn. In this case, strong young branches of this year are left to winter, like in ordinary raspberries. They are only slightly trimmed tops. But this method usually leads to the fact that the bush weakens, yield decreases, and the taste of berries deteriorates. There is also a possibility that the larvae of the raspberry beetle will feed on fruits that will ripen in summer. All these circumstances can lead to the loss of maintainability.
To avoid this, all branches after fruiting are cut off at the very base and burned. At the same time, hemp cannot be left, pests can multiply in them. In the spring, young stems will begin to develop in place of the old shoots, and by autumn they will ripen large fruits. They will not be spoiled by the raspberry beetle, since by this time it is already hibernating. With this option, one harvest is obtained per year. But the quality and quantity of berries will be excellent.
The best time and rules for pruning remontant raspberries
It is pruned twice per season: in spring and autumn.
If you left several shoots to winter, then in the spring do sanitary pruning: remove all non-wintered, weak and dry branches. You should also cut out the stems that interfere with each other, leaving no more than 10 strong branches on the plant. In order for the raspberry plant not to thicken, and all the shoots have enough nutrition and sunlight, it should be thinned out if necessary, i.e. remove unnecessary young growth.
In autumn, the entire aerial part of the shrub is cut out at the root.
But you can't rush with this pruning - the bush must have time to lay the renewal points and throw off all the foliage.
