The need for spring feeding

Despite the fact that winter is considered a period of rest (rest), plants in spring need complex feeding. They are necessary in order to replenish the nutrients that the berry bushes have spent to maintain their vitality in the cold.

In addition, fertilization activates the growing process, helps the plant to form flower buds and enter the fruiting phase earlier. Berry crops will need nitrogen-containing fertilizers in combination with organic matter (humus, compost).

Phased dressing

Fertilization under the roots of currant bushes is carried out in stages. It is important not only to follow the sequence of the procedure, but also to adhere to the correct concentration of nutrient solutions (dry mixtures).

Stage one

This is the earliest top dressing, it is carried out as soon as the ground is free of snow cover. The soil at this time is well saturated with water, it does not need to be additionally moistened - this facilitates the event. However, it is important to catch the moment before the first leaves begin to open on the currants.

Provided that fertilizers were applied to each bush in the fall, the use of nitrogen-containing dressings will be sufficient in the spring. You can use calcium or ammonium nitrate, urea. For each adult bush, from 20 to 40 g of the mineral is consumed.

Along with chemical agents, organic matter is introduced under each plant: humus, compost, wood ash. These components are used to mulch the soil in order to retain moisture. If the winter was with little snow, then the soil is pre-moistened at the rate of 1-2 buckets of water for each plant.

Stage two

The shrub is processed directly during the flowering period in order to allow the berry crop to form the future harvest. In dry weather, a fertilizer solution is prepared containing superphosphate and potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. l. on a bucket of water).

And during the rainy season, dry nutrient mixture is distributed under each bush. At the same time, the use of organic components is allowed:

  • fermented (rotted) manure;
  • compost;
  • peat;
  • humus.

Mulching the soil with these components will provide the currants with nutrition and facilitate the care of the shrub.

Stage three

In addition to fertilizers that are applied at the root, plants need feeding on the leaves. The crown of currant bushes is treated with a sprayer with a urea solution. For this, the chemical component (10 g) is dissolved in a bucket of water (10 l).

Compliance with the rules

Each stage of fertilization is carried out no earlier than 2 weeks after the previous one. The root system of the bush absorbs nutrients better in liquid form. Therefore, for top dressing, it is advisable to use solutions or moisten the soil abundantly before applying fertilizers.

Simple spring procedures will increase the immunity and productivity of the shrub. Large clusters of berries will be a worthy reward for your efforts.
