Good afternoon, my reader. The older the currant bush becomes, the more it needs autumn feeding: this is noticeable in chopped fruits and a meager harvest. Such activities are aimed at replenishing nutrients in the soil. In addition, the abundance of the harvest directly depends on them.

What are autumn feeding for?

Usually, when planting currant bushes, nutrients are added to the soil:

  • compost;
  • humus;
  • complex fertilizers;
  • wood ash.

The initial supply of phosphorus and potassium is enough for the plant for 2-3 years, no more. After this period, the soil begins to lose fertility. Therefore, feeding in the fall after harvest is a recommended activity.

Mandatory feeding

The main components for preparing currants for winter are phosphorus and potassium. These dressings strengthen the plant's immunity and the root system, make it possible to replenish the forces spent on fruiting.

In addition, complex fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium contribute to the establishment of vegetative buds. The bush that has grown stronger over the winter will begin to develop faster in spring, it will bloom on time and give a generous harvest.

Top dressing with complex fertilizers can be carried out in September. Later, 2-3 weeks before the start of frost, the currant root zone is covered with a layer of compost, humus, peat. These components will not only protect the roots of the plant from freezing, but will improve the structure of the soil and increase its fertility.

Attention! Nitrogen-containing top dressing is not used in the fall, since they provoke the growth of green mass. Young shoots will not have time to get stronger before frost and will die.

Fertilizers containing nitrogen are applied in early spring, immediately after the snow has melted. For one bush, 50 g of dry top dressing is enough, which is embedded in the ground within the radius of the near-stem zone.

Top dressing mode depending on the type of soil

The poorer the soil, the more often it needs to be fed. Nutrient components are quickly washed out from porous (sandy, sandy loam, peat) soil. Therefore, it is advisable to apply fertilizers to them every year or at least 1 time in 2 years.

For feeding, a solution of 40 g of potassium sulfate and 150 g of superphosphate per 10 l of water is prepared. For more fertile soils, this composition is used once every 2-3 years. In addition to chemical elements, organic matter is introduced under each bush before freezing (10 kg per 1 sq. m)

Alternative feeding methods

The choice of fertilizers depends on the type of soil on which the currants grow. Therefore, each case must be considered individually. Fertile soil does not need annual fertilizing with chemical components. Sometimes it is enough in the fall to mulch the root zone with humus (rotted manure, compost) at the rate of 10 kg per 1 bush.

Or use green manures as a natural fertilizer, which are sown in the fall between currant bushes:

  • mustard;
  • phacelia;
  • marigold;
  • amaranth;
  • amaranth.

In addition, all types of legumes and cereals can be planted for this purpose.

The green mass of green manures, without bringing to flowering, is mowed and embedded in the soil. These plants, decomposing in the soil, will improve its structure and replenish the supply of useful components. In addition, the remains of green mass will serve as food for microorganisms living in the earth.

Careful care of currants in the fall will not be slow to show itself in the next season. Fortified plants will certainly delight summer residents with bunches of large berries and a generous harvest.
