  • First of all, select the planting material. It should be the best, healthy potato, of the correct shape, without visible damage. Cut the tuber in half, if it is sick it will be noticeable.
  • Then keep the selected tubers warm, out of sunlight, so that they germinate. Not too long shoots are needed, they can break. Choose potatoes that have at least three eyes.
  • Before planting, treat the tubers against diseases with any remedy, for example, Fitosporin, and for the Colorado potato beetle, for example, Prestige.

  • Plant potatoes in late April - early May, be sure to fertilize the soil in the holes with ash, you can also add nitrophosphate.
  • If the spring is dry, the vegetable needs watering, then it will rise quickly.
  • When the tops appear, the potatoes must be spud several times.
  • After flowering, weed the beds regularly so that weeds do not interfere with the growth of the vegetable, and also harvest the Colorado potato beetle or treat the greens with insecticides, if necessary.
  • The "neighbors" of potatoes play a very important role. It is most useful to plant it next to cabbage, onions, beans, corn.
  • Subject to these simple conditions, you will get an excellent harvest of tasty and large potatoes. Often store potatoes have the same taste, and are born large and high-yielding. All you have to do is find a place to store your potatoes for the winter and plant them next spring.

However, when planting tubers from the store, you can face a number of problems.

  • When buying potatoes for planting in a store, you are unlikely to know which variety you are purchasing.
  • Various diseases can lurk in purchased tubers: late blight, septoria, alternaria and others. They can infect the soil even for several years.
  • The stores often sell potatoes from Egypt or Israel, where the climatic conditions are completely different from those in central Russia. Therefore, one can hardly expect a good harvest from such planting material.
  • Before deciding to plant tubers from the store, try cooking them in different ways, because potatoes that are good when boiled may not be suitable for frying.
Thus, if you are not pursuing the goal of breeding a valuable variety, then potatoes from a store may well be suitable as a planting one, the main thing is to choose the best one.
