Good afternoon, my reader. Anthurium grows naturally in Central and South America. They cultivated it and bred home varieties because of its unusual and beautiful flowering. It blooms, forming a bright red heart, but there are varieties with other colors.

Description of species and varieties

The varieties differ from each other in the shape of the leaves, it can be heart-shaped, elongated, whole, wide and dissected. All the beauty of the plant lies in the inflorescences, which, depending on the species, can be white, burgundy and even black.

There are more than 800 cultivars open, but far fewer are grown at home. Most are more often cultivated in greenhouses, because they are difficult to grow in apartment conditions. The most popular ones are:

  • Andre Anthurium - reaches up to 1 m in length, has large smooth leaves and an aerial root system.
  • instagram viewer
  • Scherzer is the most popular domestic species, reaching 45 cm in height. The leaves are dark green, dull and covered with dark dots. The inflorescences are colored bright orange.
  • Crystal - a low flower with velvet leaves, with translucent white streaks.

These types can be roughly divided into three groups:

  • Beautifully flowering.
  • Variegated.
  • Green-leaved.

Home care

The main rule of caring for an anthurim is to create the most natural conditions for him, to which he is accustomed in the wild. To make the flower feel good, pay attention to the following factors:

  • Watering and feeding. This tropical plant needs abundant watering, but not frequent watering. In the summer, you need to water 3 times a week. But be sure to place a tray under the pot so that excess moisture drips onto it. In winter, watering should be reduced to 1 time per week, because the plant goes into a dormant state. But you can spray and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth. Otherwise, a fungus will form and the roots will rot. Mineral and organic fertilizers should be actively applied during the period of active growth.
  • Temperature. The plant prefers the temperature standard for tropical flowers - 22 - 25 degrees in summer and spring, in autumn and winter it must be reduced to 18 degrees. IMPORTANT! Anthurium does not tolerate drafts, so place it in a place where air does not constantly circulate.
  • Lighting. For a plant, the best option would be bright, but diffused natural light. Do not expose the leaves to direct sunlight, they will deform, dry and fall off.
  • Soil composition. The flower loves a light sod soil interspersed with deciduous fibers and moss. This soil is as similar as possible to natural land, where the plant grows in natural conditions. Also, the soil should be slightly acidic.

What diseases do anthurium attack

If you violate the rules for caring for a flower, then it gets sick, and subsequently dies.

Signs of disease:

  • Yellowed leaves indicate that the flower lacks warmth.
  • The lack of buds indicates three factors: not enough light, not enough nutrients, or too much capacity.
  • Curling and blackening of leaves causes frequent and abundant watering.
  • Yellow and white spots on the leaves appear due to septoria disease or downy mildew.
