Good afternoon, my reader. For 2020, there are more than 80 cultivated varieties of hydrangea, from which professional breeders have bred more than 100 hybrid varieties. They are divided into groups: erect, thermophilic, evergreen, deciduous, dwarf, tree-like and frost-resistant.

The shape of the leaves is also different - oval, round, with jagged or wavy edges. Also, the shape of the inflorescences depends on the variety, they are in the form of a panicle, pineal, umbrella-shaped and repeating a ball. Hydrangea blooms for a long time, in nature there are white, red, lilac, blue, crimson and pink colors. Hybrid specimens may have a mixed and transitional palette.
The most beautiful and popular hydrangea is the Japanese large-leaved hydrangea with spherical flowering. This is one of the oldest varieties in Europe, it appeared in the 18th century.
Hydrangea varieties adapted for Russia
In central Russia, three varieties feel good: paniculate, tree-like and serrate.
Tree-like (sometimes called wild) winter-hardy variety, the bush grows tall, on average up to 2.5 meters in height. The leaves of such a hydrangea are pointed, the inflorescences are large, dense, and can be painted in different colors. It is believed that this is the most unpretentious variety, therefore it is often used in various garden compositions throughout the country. The tree hydrangea does not need shelter in winter and can be planted in shaded areas in the garden.
Serrated the hydrangea is not as tall as the tree-like one, it is a spreading bush, reaching 1.2 - 1.5 meters in height. The leaves of this variety are oval and slightly pointed at the ends, painted in a rich light green color. The inflorescences are predominantly blue and spherical.
IMPORTANT! The color of the flowers of the serrated hydrangea depends on the acidity of the soil. The higher the acidity, the brighter the color shade will be.
The serrated hydrangea tolerates transplants well, adapts quickly and prefers regular but moderate watering. The serrated hydrangea can be planted throughout Russia, but it must be covered for the winter.
Paniculata hydrangea is considered to be the most beautiful and popular among landscape designers. The bush of this variety can grow from 2 to 5 meters in height, in mild climates it does not need shelter from the cold. Inflorescences are formed in the form of panicles, elliptical leaves are slightly lowered down. The panicle hydrangea begins to bloom in mid-June and does not stop until the frost.
Creation of favorable conditions on the site
For all types of hydrangeas, the following conditions must be provided:
- Hydrangeas are planted in lighted areas, but do not allow direct sunlight to fall on them.
- The soil should be neutral or slightly acidic.
- Organic fertilizing is applied before planting - manure and bone meal.
- In the spring, nitrogen fertilizers are applied.
- In autumn, it is appropriate to add potassium salt to the soil.
- Sanitary pruning should be carried out before the first severe cold weather.
- At a temperature of -35 degrees and below, all varieties of hydrangeas take refuge.
