Good afternoon, my reader. This plant is unpretentious in care, its cultivation does not take much time and effort and does not require high gardening skills. These advantages make the hostu common among gardeners. The necessary rules for caring for a host: creating a shade or partial shade, providing it with abundant watering, this will be enough to maintain its comfort and growth. To give a spectacular appearance, the bushes are mulched and the soil is fed. All these activities are simple and ordinary, and the hosta is not considered a capricious plant, which is why most people love her.

A controversial and controversial point in caring for a host - whether she needs an autumn pruning. Will removing old and dried leaves help new ones grow? Will it be a useless undertaking or will it harm the plant before winter?

Benefits of pruning and why you should do it

  • The most important argument in favor of autumn pruning is to remove leaves with visible defects and protect the whole plant from bacteria and fungi that are likely to affect these leaves. Pests and infections will not be able to occupy a large area of the bush, and the host will be much healthier. The reverse side of this coin - the hosta is rarely sick, the most malicious pests for her are slugs and snails, and their effect does not touch the leaves, but the soil (they lay eggs in the ground at the end of summer), and for this harm, pruning the hosta does not will affect.
  • In regions of Russia with severe winters, the plant must be covered for this period. In the case when pruning has been carried out beforehand, it is much easier and more convenient to do this. But with the onset of temperatures close to zero, the leaves of the hosta weaken and sink to the ground, this makes the shrub compact and the shelter procedure is simple and quick.
  • There is an opinion that a wilted and yellowed bush makes the area ugly, looks untidy and casts a blues. However, there is a different approach to this issue too - there is no need to get upset because of the temporary wilting of plants, because this means that in a few months spring will come and all the beautiful plantings will bloom again and bloom.

Why not pruning?

  • A more convincing argument is that cropping is likely to harm the host, and it is difficult to get it done on time. If this event is carried out earlier than expected, the shrub will begin to germinate, and this, in turn, will reduce frost resistance. If done later, the plant will not be properly winterized. There is a risk that with the wrongly chosen pruning time, the host may simply not overwinter. Only an experienced specialist can cope with determining the term of this procedure, it is better for beginners not to undertake this.
  • The leaves of the shrub contain a set of nutrients, and the process of wilting of the leaves is accompanied by the transfer of these substances to the roots. By cutting off these parts of the plant too early, the grower weakens the plant and deprives it of essential nutrients.
  • If you overdo it and cut the shrub too low, root collar rot can occur, and this leads to the death of hosts and is very dangerous.
  • Large wilted leaves protect the root system during frost.
  • Pruning is a lengthy, time-consuming exercise and very troublesome. During this period of time, you can do something useful, prepare other plants for winter.

Finally, it should be mentioned that it is not necessary to prune the host in the fall. Unfortunately, its disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and the procedure is quite complicated.
