What is the principle of currant rejuvenation
Currant bushes have an “expiration date”. After a certain number of years, they lose the ability to produce bountiful crops. But this is normal, experienced gardeners know about it and prepare for it in advance. However, currants can stop bearing fruit for other reasons. If you have never used a pruner, then the currant bush will be a sad sight:
- Planting becomes tight and thick without seasonal pruning. This not only looks sloppy and makes harvesting difficult, but also creates an attractive environment for the development of diseases and attacks of various harmful insects.
- A tight planting does not allow the bushes to develop correctly, the branches are not positioned correctly, the berries remain in the shade.
- Old branches drown out young shoots, pulling nutrients from them.
When to rejuvenate currants
There are many factors by which one can understand that the currants have aged. This also depends on the variety, region of growth, climate, quality of care or lack thereof, seasonal and sanitary pruning.
Experienced gardeners recommend rejuvenating the shrubs every seven years. Also, the need for global pruning can be understood by the appearance of currant bushes:
- many sick and old shoots have formed on the bush;
- the bush grew to incredible sizes and fell apart;
- in the center there is a strong degree of thickening;
- currants do not yield a good harvest (if diseases and nutritional deficiencies are excluded).
In these cases, rejuvenating pruning can be started before the plant is seven years old.
Autumn pruning rules
You can start pruning when all the leaves have fallen from the bush. Experienced gardeners believe that autumn is the best time to rejuvenate currants.
It is necessary to delete without regret:
- Large, crooked, lichen-infested and generally diseased branches.
- Absolutely all diseased shoots, there is no point in treating them, healthy ones are formed in the spring.
- All the branches that drag and lie on the ground.
- One of two branches located side by side and growing in the same direction.
The rest of the branches can be cut by two or three quarters as needed.
REFERENCE! In cases where the planting is too neglected, it is better to stretch the rejuvenation for a couple of years. That is, in the first autumn, cut off all unnecessary shoots, then in the next autumn you can take up the lower branches and form a neat bush. A sharp loss of a large part of the crown for currants is stressful.
