Good afternoon, my reader. Saintpaulia, or the Usambara violet, native to eastern Africa, is a home flower with green leaves that are velvety to the touch and simple or corrugated flowers of various colors. It received its name from a botanist of French origin Saint-Paul Hiller, who first described this type of flowers.

Methods for feeding violets

  • Root. There are fertilizers that are dissolved in water, and this liquid is poured over the soil in the pot. Those that do not dissolve are poured into a bowl, and they gradually release nutrients to the Saintpaulia when watering.
  • Foliar feeding is carried out by spraying the leaves of the plant from a spray bottle. It is better to apply the liquid on the lower part of the leaves, avoiding contact with the flowers.
  • Into pallet (wick). Some growers find this method works best for plants. Fertilizers are dissolved in water and the violets are poured into a tray.

Folk remedies for fertilizing violets

  • Black tea. You can fertilize Saintpaulia both with tea leaves and with the tea solution itself. The used tea leaves are mixed with the potting soil, and the plant is watered at the root with not very strong tea.
Tea contains potassium, calcium, iron, boron, magnesium, manganese - all these trace elements are useful for violets. You can fertilize the plant with tea once every two weeks.
  • Coffee grounds. If you drink natural coffee, your violets will be happy about it. The grounds are dried, mixed with earth and added to a pot of saintpaulia. Coffee makes the soil more acidic and breathable. At the same time, the violet receives nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, copper and iron.
  • Fertilize the plant yeast best in spring, when the violet has weakened over the winter. As a result, the greens begin to grow faster, the roots become stronger. To prepare top dressing take 1 tbsp. l. dry yeast and dissolve them in 10 liters of warm water, add 30 g of sugar, insist for a day. Add 20 liters of settled water to the resulting mixture and use it to water violets. Yeast provides nitrogen to Saintpaulia. After winter, it is enough to water the violets with yeast 1-2 times.
  • Banana water. To prepare the fertilizer, cut 2-3 banana skins, pour 3 liters of boiled water, leave for 3 days. The resulting liquid is brought to a volume of 6 liters with water and the plants are watered. Banana peels contain substances useful for violets - potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium. You need to fertilize Saintpaulias with banana water regularly, then the plants will bloom for a long time, and their leaves remain green.
  • Onion peel - an excellent fertilizer for violets. The husk from three onions is poured with 1 liter of water and boiled for half an hour. The solution is infused for 4-5 hours, filtered and watered over the plants. The husk liquid contains carotene, vitamins B and C, phytoncides, tocopherol, quercetin.
  • Sugar. Fertilizing violets is very simple, you need to dissolve 1 tbsp. l. sugar in 1 liter of water at room temperature and immediately water the plants. From sugar water, Saintpaulia will receive calcium, potassium, vitamin B2, sodium, selenium and iron.
  • Citrus peel. For feeding, a clean chopped peel of one fruit is taken, 0.5 liters of boiling water is poured, infused for 1 day. The resulting solution must be filtered and brought up to 5 liters with clean water. You can water Saintpaulias with such a liquid regularly. The peel contains vitamins A, B, C, which have a positive effect on the immunity of violets. You can spray the leaves of the plant in order to prevent pest attacks.
Wood ash - a well-known storehouse of trace elements, it contains potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium. To prepare top dressing take 1 tbsp. l. ash and pour 1 liter of hot water. The mixture is insisted for a week, shaking regularly. The solution is not filtered, it is necessary to water the saintpaulias once every two weeks.
