Good afternoon, my reader. Preparing hydrangeas for winter in the fall is essential. Proper care in the fall will allow the plant to easily overwinter and stay strong and healthy. Different types of hydrangeas require a different approach to winter preparation.

Large-leaved hydrangea

This type of garden hydrangea requires careful preparation for winter and a high-quality shelter, since it is absolutely not frost-resistant. Even slightly frozen buds will die, and the hydrangea will not bloom.

The first stage of preparation for the winter period begins in mid-September. All foliage below is cut to the middle of the bush. This will allow the shoots to bark faster. After removing the foliage without fail, the plant is fed with fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium.

In mid-October, large-leaved hydrangea is insulated. This must be done before the onset of night frosts. Do not be afraid that the plant will rot, for this species there is no danger in this, unlike frost.

The bush is neatly tied with twine and wrapped with a covering material, with a density of at least 60 g / m², in two layers. The material is fixed so that it will not be blown off by the winds.

Tree hydrangea

This type is unpretentious and calmly tolerates cold weather. But large-flowered varieties grown in southern nurseries will need hilling, which protects the plant's root system from frost.

In regions with heavy snowfalls, it is necessary to cut off dried inflorescences near the tree-like hydrangea so that the snow accumulating on them does not break the shoots with its weight. Removal of inflorescences is carried out in late autumn. Together with them, parts of the shoots that did not manage to be covered with tree bark are also cut off.

The foliage around the plant is collected and burned. This will protect the hydrangea from pests wintering in leaf litter and possible diseases.

Hilling is carried out with peat, garden soil, manure (necessarily rotted), a layer of about 20 cm.

Panicle hydrangea

Needs hilling of the root system to protect it from frost. Hilling is carried out in the same way as for tree hydrangea.

Otherwise, it survives the winter well without additional shelter.

Autumn breeding hydrangea

In the fall, you can carry out the reproduction of hydrangea bushes with the help of overgrowth, dividing the bush and layering.

The division of the bushes is carried out in September or early October. The separated parts are planted in new places, be sure to process the cut roots with crushed activated carbon.

Reproduction by layering is not always effective for hydrangeas. In order to test this method, a branch growing at the bottom of the bush is tilted into a groove 15 cm deep, secured with hairpins or bows, buried and watered. The top of the branch is left above the ground. As soon as the cold weather approaches, the layers are covered for the winter.

The next year, a groove is dug out and the shoot is separated from an adult bush. An escape can be planted in a permanent place in 1-2 years, but for now it is sent to grow on a special bed - a school.

Treelike and panicle hydrangea do not require special care in the fall in preparation for winter. Large-leaved will require more time and effort, but by following all the recommendations, you can preserve the beauty and health of the shrub.
