When is the best time to feed
In August, you need to properly fertilize vegetables. This is because the nights are getting colder. As a result, the risk of developing fungal infections due to high humidity increases. Powdery mildew develops most often, and this problem occurs in open ground and in a greenhouse with the same probability. Along with top dressing, they provide suitable growth conditions for cucumbers - they reduce moisture in the root zone.
When applying fertilizers to improve the yield, the air temperature must be taken into account. So, if it gets even cooler during the day (+ 8... + 10 ° С), root feeding is not performed. The reason lies in the poor absorption of nutrients by the cucumber stalks. The level of moisture in the root zone is regulated by mulching. As a result, heat is better retained in the soil, which contributes to the normalization of all processes in the tissues of plantations, and feeding is more efficiently perceived.
It is recommended to use onion skins, from which they form a layer on the surface of the soil around the plants. But in order for the raw material to give off nutrients, you must first boil it. The tool is applied no earlier than 24 hours after that. It is necessary to water the cucumbers with a product, the husk will fit on top.
Choosing a feeding method in the greenhouse and in the open field
Consider special fertilizers and self-prepared products, including:
- Ash. You can burn plant residues to get it. Such a remedy provides cucumbers with nutrients: potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus. If you need to add ash to strengthen the plants in the greenhouse, powder the soil under the bushes with powder, and then water it. On the open ground, another method is used - a solution is prepared: 100 g of ash, 10 liters of water. First, the liquid is heated to boiling water, then poured into a container. The finished product is insisted for 5 days. To get a good harvest of cucumbers, you need to water each bush under the root.
- Superphosphate. It is used in August to improve plant immunity. This reduces the risk of developing diseases and ensures a good harvest. A working solution of superphosphate is used, a fertilizer based on potassium or phosphorus is added to it (1 tbsp. l. 10 liters of liquid). It should be borne in mind that superphosphate dissolves better in hot water than in cold water, and therefore it is recommended to pre-fill it with liquid.
- Whey, urea. The substances are used separately. If the first of them is used, prepare a solution: 9 liters of water, 1 liter of whey. Urea recipe: 10 liters of liquid, 15 g of the product. When the weather is cool, you can spray the bushes, but if the air temperature is high, you need to apply fertilizer at the root. When it gets colder, to get a good harvest, cucumbers should be covered overnight. The same measure is taken during a period when it rains frequently.
- Special means are considering "Kemira-Lux", "Solution". With their help, yields are also increased. Both compositions are prepared for use according to the same scheme: 1 l of water, ½ h. l. fertilizers. Substances are used for foliar feeding, their spraying is performed after 5 pm.
To get a good harvest, it is recommended to use products that will help protect the plantings from infections.
For prophylaxis, a solution is used: 1 liter of water, 1 kg of manure. It is introduced 7 days after preparation. This is not only a method of preventing diseases, but also a good feeding to improve the yield of cucumbers.
