Autumn procedure rules

Growing currants requires constant planting care, crown regulation. The crop must be pruned after harvest is complete. The procedure is carried out to prepare for winter, increase the yield for the next year, obtain large berries, adjust the shape of plantings, and prevent the growth of fruit crops. The procedure helps to exclude damage to plants by pests and diseases.

The list of items required for cutting:

  • branches that disrupt growth and thicken the shrub;
  • shoots of irregular shape;
  • branches that shade the fruit bush.

At the end of the procedure, remove the old leaves under the bushes.

Pruning is carried out on sunny days without precipitation. It is optimal to plan the manipulation for the second half of September - mid-October. Work is carried out before the onset of frost. Special tools are needed to carry out the currant pruning procedure. Pruners, garden knives must be sharp, disinfected.

For young fruit crops that have not yet yielded, work is carried out promptly. You will need to partially cut off the root branches that will not bear fruit. It is recommended to leave no more than 4 good shoots, with which you can form the correct crown shape of the fruit crop.

When pruning a plant that is more than 5 years old, dried and deformed branches are removed. Old shoots deplete the plant and reduce its yield. The thickened crown is damaged by insects and diseases. A preliminary examination of an adult plant is required. Branches with brown bark need to be cut, green-colored branches are left to form plantings. Shoots with underdeveloped buds are cut to keep the currants healthy.

Stages of pruning currant plantings

Autumn cutting of the crown is carried out in compliance with the following stages:

  • First, you need to shorten the currant branches along the edges of the crown by 1/4 of the length. The currant bush takes on a neat look.
  • Then the crown is thinned out, excess leaves and branches that shade the plant are cut off.
  • Branches that do not bear fruit, are weak, damaged by pests, diseases are removed.
  • After pruning, hemp must be treated with a special solution for disinfecting plantings.
  • After the currant reaches the age of 8 years, it is required to cut off all the branches that grow from the moment the shrub was planted.

After completing the procedure, it is necessary to feed the fruit crop. For this, mineral and organic products are used. It is optimal to add phosphorus and potash compositions in autumn. Gardeners recommend using manure that is spread under the plant and mixed with the soil. As an addition to the autumn procedure, leaves are harvested, which, when overheated, can promote the growth of bacteria and insect pests. Wood ash is also added under the bushes (300 g each).
