What to do if tomatoes are fattening in a greenhouse

  • Dec 13, 2020

Many gardeners have to deal with the phenomenon when tomatoes fatten in the greenhouse - they increase the green mass in all directions, but without the rapid formation of fruit ovaries. The laying of peduncles on fattening bushes is slow, while the flowers do not stand out with special vitality. To prevent crop loss, you need to take some drastic action and rethink your crop management.

Description of the fatliquoring process

The fattening of tomatoes is a common problem in greenhouse cultivation. In protected conditions, tomatoes look normal but refuse to develop. Their leaf plates become large and dense.

In this case, the brushes of inflorescences lose their attractive appearance, and their number is sharply reduced. You can determine that tomatoes are fattening by the following manifestations:

  • Tomato leaves and shoots in the greenhouse begin to grow rapidly.
  • The number of stepchildren on the bushes is growing rapidly.
  • The root system becomes overly strong and dense.
  • The shoots thicken and the foliage becomes bright green.
  • Fruit ovaries are either absent or are formed at a low rate.
  • Twisted leaves appear at the top of the plant.
Often, an overabundance of dressings and deviation from normal moisture leads to fattening.

Getting any benefit from fattening tomatoes is problematic, and the disadvantages of the phenomenon are quite extensive:

  • The cultivation process requires large expenses for the purchase of planting material, fertilizing and chemicals.
  • Plants take up a lot of useful space in the greenhouse, but do not fulfill their main function.
  • The gardener has to spend a lot of time caring for the plant, but this does not improve the yield.
  • The quality and taste of the fruit deteriorate.

What provokes fattening

Deviations during the growing season in tomatoes are associated with some predisposing factors. Fatting is no exception. The rapid formation of green mass more often occurs in representatives of indeterminate varieties of tomatoes, which have long stems and a large number of new branches.

Determinant tomatoes do not have high requirements for growing in a greenhouse, since they have a limited height and direct the main forces to the formation of fruit ovaries.

Faced with the increased growth of stepchildren and insufficiently good setting of the crop, the feeding scheme should be revised. The soil may contain too much compost, nitrogen-based minerals or humus.

Often, improper feeding with the use of mineral preparations leads to fattening. Also, the problem is provoked by the application of fertilizers with a high concentration of nutrients.

Other reasons for fattening include excessively high air humidity, lack of lighting and thickening of plantings. Tomatoes are also fattened due to non-observance of the required temperature regime in the greenhouse.
