There are several ways of reproduction of junipers: seed, dividing the bush, layering and cuttings. Experienced gardeners believe that the most simple and effective is cuttings. However, it is not suitable for all types of juniper.

What types of juniper can be propagated by cuttings

Such types of juniper are well suited for cuttings: Chinese, rocky, horizontal, medium, scaly.

What is the best time of the year for cuttings

Experienced gardeners consider autumn to be the best time for cuttings. Since in spring and summer, due to warm weather, plants do not have the amount of moisture that cuttings need to take root faster.

Sequence of actions for grafting

  • We choose last year's green twig, which has not yet grown stiff, at least 15 cm and no more than 25 cm.
  • We cut it off with a "heel", that is, capturing part of the branch on which the cutting grew. We do this carefully, with a sharp sterile instrument, trying not to damage the bark.
  • We plant the twig in a pre-prepared substrate, which consists of half of peat and sand.
  • We make a hole in the substrate 3-4 cm and bury the stalk in it.
  • The room temperature should be between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius.
  • The substrate must be constantly moist, so we spray every day.
  • It is necessary to create the effect of a greenhouse, so cover the flowerpot with a handle with a film or a cut off top of a plastic bottle.
  • Lighting should be diffused, that is, direct sunlight should not hit the plant.
  • It is necessary to often ventilate the flowerpot with cuttings to prevent the accumulation of condensation, due to which the decay process can begin.
  • The stalk should be in the flowerpot for 2-3 months, during which time it will take root well. Although the roots of the cuttings are already released for 25-30 days.

And then we plant it in the ground.

When cuttings, the juniper retains all the qualities of the mother plant, grows and develops rapidly. He is little susceptible to various diseases.

What is a layering, and what types of juniper are best propagated in this way

Creeping juniper species must be propagated by layering. For this, only young shoots are used. We bend the twig and fix it on the ground with special pins. We constantly huddle and moisten the place of contact with the ground so that the root system develops. This requires about six months, and sometimes a year. Once the twig is rooted, it can be detached from the mother plant and transplanted elsewhere.
