Why do onion feathers turn yellow

If the onion begins to become covered with yellow spots, the reason always depends on the season:

  • mid-June - lack of moisture, the presence of pests;
  • end of July - everything is in order, the onion just stops growing

Onions can be eaten by so-called onion flies, as well as various bugs, as a result of which the tips of the feathers turn yellow. These insects sleep in the soil in winter, and in spring they crawl out and look for food for themselves, finding it in onion feathers.

In addition to flies, another dangerous pest is the gray-headed beetle, which has an elongated body. You can recognize the presence of this beetle in the garden by the characteristic white spots and stripes on the leaves.

How to protect onions from pests

To protect your crop ahead of time from onion flies, you need to dig deeper before planting. The sooner you plant the onion, the faster it will get stronger and less vulnerable to parasite attack. To ward off beetles, plant carrots between the rows of onions, as insects react negatively to the smell of the tops and hide.

If yellowness has already been found on the onion feathers, all affected bushes should be removed from the site, if there are not too many flies yet. If the flies have already managed to lay the larvae and hatch offspring on the site, you need to sprinkle the ground around the onion rows with ash - this will scare away insects.

In the fall, you will need to remove the remaining bushes from the beds, otherwise the pupae of the onion flies will move into the ground, go to winter in the soil, and in the spring they will again terrorize your garden.

It is always necessary to remove crop residues from the territory on time, as this is the most fertile soil for the reproduction of parasites in the future.

It is also important to properly care for the growing onions: water only at the root, on top - only with a shallow watering can, so that the bulbs sensitive to moisture are not exposed. The most effective remedy will be a plant growth activator that will help you get a good harvest and get rid of this problem - the unsightly yellowing of the plant tips.

To prevent the reproduction of parasites on the site, you can prepare a product based on salt and ash. To prepare the solution, exactly one bucket of water is taken, an ampoule of pharmacy ammonia is poured into it, three handfuls of ash and half a glass of ordinary table salt are poured. The resulting mixture is mixed well. Water the area once every ten days until the feathers turn green again.
