Description of wild grapes

Picky wild grapes are perennials. Withstands severe frosts down to -50 ° С without constructing shelters for it. It absolutely does not need additional watering, being content with precipitation. Propagated both by seeds and by the entire vegetative mass.

The lowest recorded height was 5 m. The highest is 30 m. The color of the foliage in summer is dark emerald or green and white. Frosts give the leaves a bright cherry color. At the end of summer, brushes with small blue or purple berries ripen on the lianas, which the birds use for food.

Growing stepchildren of grapes grow roots that grow down from the stem and are able to attach even to a perfectly flat surface.

Liana, in addition to its decorative function, will protect the walls from getting wet in the rain and shelter from direct sunlight. The one wrapped around the fence will not let dust and noise, hide from passers-by.

Planting methods and timing

Propagation of this perennial plant is quite simple. There are several ways that are not difficult even for those who are doing it for the first time.

Propagation by cuttings

It is best to carry out cuttings in early spring. This requires:

  • At the beginning of spring, choose one-year branches without damage with a thickness of 1 to 1.5 cm. Cut them into pieces with a length of 20-30 cm, on each piece there should be from 3 to 5 buds.
  • Spill the prepared containers with nutrient soil with water with crushed activated carbon. Plant the cuttings at an inclination of 45 °, compact the earth around them.
  • Pots with cuttings are placed on the windowsill and watered daily with water at room temperature. On days 30-45, the stalk will release the roots, after which watering is done every other day.
  • Planting the cuttings on the street in a permanent place, in the absence of frost.

You can plant cuttings directly into the soil outside. In October, the branch is cut into pieces and buried in a new place. Cover with organic matter 30 cm high. In spring, cuttings take root.

Seed planting

With the help of seeds, wild grapes are usually propagated by specialists in nurseries. Growing a plant in this way at home is difficult, but possible. This will require:

  • Put cheesecloth in shallow dishes and pour water with a growth stimulator there - you can use any. Seeds are laid on top of cheesecloth.
  • Place the plate with seeds on the top shelf of the refrigerator for 10 days. Top up with evaporating water.
  • The seeds are placed in a warm place for 5 days, and then back in the refrigerator for another 10 days.
  • The awakened seeds are planted in pots with pre-prepared nutrient soil, to a depth of no more than 1 cm. Every day, watered with water diluted in it with a growth stimulant.
  • At the end of May, if there is no night frost, the seedlings can be planted outside.

Reproduction by offspring

Young growth that grows around grapes can be excellently used for propagation. To do this you need:

  • In early April, the shoots, the height of which has reached 60 cm, must be bent to the ground and fixed with a bent strong wire.
  • Cover the place where the growth is fixed with straw or dry grass. Water daily.
  • At the end of September, the branch that has taken root should be carefully cut off from the main vineyard and planted in a new place.
ATTENTION! Seedlings that have already adhered to the support are not allowed to be torn off. Detachment of the suckers from the base leads to their death and subsequent plant disease. The grapes will survive, but will permanently lose their ability to curl.

Caring for wild grapes after planting

The unpretentiousness and stability of the plant allows not to devote much time to care. In the first year after planting, weekly watering will be required (except for the winter period), two-time top dressing in the summer, pruning of the vines (if it has grown a lot).

If the supporting wall for the vines is too smooth, then the young seedling needs additional support. After a year, grapes will climb any walls without help.

Wild grapes will help create a real fairy tale on the site. It is easy to grow it, and it does not require special care.
