One of the main care issues is feeding. When, how and how many times do you need to fertilize the flower in order to provide all the necessary nutrients, but not overfeed?
When to start feeding
A freshly purchased plant with flowering buds should not be fed. You need to wait until the flowering ends and give the orchid a rest for a month or two. During the dormant period, the flower is watered no more than 1 time in 14 days, fertilizer is not applied and the plant is kept in a room with a temperature of no higher than 16 degrees Celsius.
The orchid itself will show when it is sufficiently rested. You need to focus on the appearance of young air roots, the tips of which will be bright green. Simultaneously with the roots, peduncles often begin to grow - uniformly colored shoots with thickened buds at the ends.
After a period of rest, intensive care must be resumed:
- watering - once every 7 days;
- feeding - according to the instructions.
Pouring over an orchid is harmful. When it's time to water, there should be no condensation on the walls of a transparent flower pot, if there is, watering should be postponed to a later time.
From the moment the flower buds appear, the orchid is fertilized until the flowers bloom.
For fertilization, it is better to choose professional products. The composition of such dressings includes:
- nitrogen - for growing greenery, is necessary at the beginning of the growth period;
- phosphorus, potassium - for the formation of peduncles and prolongation of flowering.
Phosphorus and potassium are required during bud formation. The composition of dressings also includes iron, copper, sulfur, zinc, manganese, boron and others.
Volumes and methods of fertilization
For a special flower, there is a special feeding algorithm:
- spill the soil with clean water;
- dilute fertilizer in a wide bowl;
- pour part of the solution into a glass;
- place the flower pot in a bowl, pour the cast solution under the root;
- soak the plant for 20 minutes;
- Take out the pot and put it on the drip tray.
Fertilizers are applied at the root. Top dressing by leaves with a minimum concentration is carried out if the plant is young or with chlorosis - lack of nutrition.
Manufacturers recommend the following feeding scheme:
- from November to February - once every 30 days;
- from February to November - once every 10 days.
What can not be fed to an orchid
There is a list of common substances that cannot be used to fertilize a flower:
- droppings, manure. Organic matter containing this substance in large quantities can damage the delicate roots;
- infusions of herbs. A capricious flower may unexpectedly react to such fertilization, since it is impossible to calculate the appropriate dosage of the solution;
- fertilizers for other flowers. For orchids, dressings have been developed that take into account their characteristics;
- ash. The soil for orchids has an unusual soil composition;
- garlic. Suitable for feeding an orchid only in the case when an urgent resuscitation of the plant is required and it cannot be saved in any other way.
For feeding an exotic flower, specially designed complexes are suitable that will help the orchid grow and bloom in full force.
