  • Most gardeners miss a healthy strawberry crop during the first year (growing season) of their planting.
  • It is harder to find strawberry plants for sale during the spring months simply due to supply and demand. In autumn, demand is much lower, so the supply is much less.

Why autumn

Gardeners have been able to make sure for themselves that autumn is the best time to plant. The soil is warmed up, strawberries will harden over the winter and will give a good harvest for the summer.

The procedure can be carried out from late August to late September. The period is optimal, since the heat is gone, but it is warm enough outside.

It is important to plant at the right time of day. It must be evening. Pre-fertilize and moisten the soil. The optimal fertilizer is humus.

Choosing a place

Plants need 6-10 hours a day of direct sunlight. Sun is difficult to provide in autumn, so choose your planting site accordingly.

She is tolerant of different types of soil, but prefers loam. Ideally, start working with seasoned manure or compost a couple of months before planting. If the soil is clayey, add compost and rake it into raised mounds to improve drainage. If the soil is sandy, simply treat it to remove weeds and mix with a layer of thick compost or rotted manure.

The PH of the soil should be between 5.5 and 7. Correct the soil before planting if necessary. If they are naturally alkaline, it is best to grow strawberries in half-casks or other large containers filled with compost-rich soil.

The landing site should be well-drained. Tall beds are especially good for strawberries.

Practice crop rotation for the greatest success. Do not plant in areas where strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants have recently grown.

Provide enough room for growth. Place the plants half a meter apart to allow room for shoots and leave 120 cm between rows.

When the plants are planted, the roots should not be longer than 20 cm. Trim them if necessary.

Make the planting holes deep and wide enough to accommodate the entire root system without bending it. However, don't plant too deep! The roots should be covered, but the crown should be right on top of the soil. It is very important not to bury the central growing bud of the plant, otherwise it may rot! Leaves, flowers and fruits should be exposed to light and fresh air.

Water the plants well during planting.

Care

Keep your garden beds mulched to reduce the need for water and weed infestation. Any type of mulch - from black plastic to pine straw and shredded leaves - will keep the soil moist and the plants clean.

Fertilize with universal granules for strong growth.

In the first year, pick off the flowers so that the strawberries do not bear fruit. If they are not allowed to bear fruit, they will spend their reserves on developing healthy roots. In the second year, the yield will be much higher.

Remove daughter plants if necessary. The first and second generations produce higher yields. Try to keep the daughter plants about 30 cm apart.

Perennial strawberry plants. They are naturally frost-resistant and can withstand moderately negative temperatures. So if your area has mild winters, no special care is required.

In regions where temperatures drop below twenty degrees, strawberries are dormant. It is best to provide winter protection:

Mulch your plants with straw, pine needles, or other organic material.

In colder regions, more insulating mulch should be added.

Natural precipitation must adequately maintain sufficient soil moisture.

Remove the mulch in early spring when the frost hazard has passed.
