The benefits and harms of ants
Having these insects in the country may be of little benefit. Due to the vital activity of ants in their places of permanent residence, the garden soil contains about 10 times more phosphorus and 2 times more potassium. In addition, caterpillars and other garden pests are the main food for these insects.
However, the harm from them is much greater:
- Ants contribute to the appearance of a large number of aphids in the garden, which has a detrimental effect on fruit and berry trees and shrubs, and it is quite difficult to fight it.
- Insects eat sweet berries, eat up the insides of buds and buds, and destroy young greens and foliage.
- They create an extensive network of underground passages, which leads to the death of the root systems of cultivated plants.
- Gradually, ants create colonies in country houses, which leads to spoilage of food.
How to deal with insects
In order not to use chemicals in the garden and garden plots that can negatively affect the harvest, you can use the proven recipes of experienced summer residents:
- You can fight insects with smells, since they do not tolerate pungent unpleasant odors. You can spread chopped anise leaves, wormwood stems, parsley, crushed garlic cloves, tomato tops, ground cinnamon, elderberry leaves around the anthill and in places where ants accumulate.
- To quickly destroy an anthill, you can pour it abundantly with kerosene, trying to let the liquid penetrate as deep as possible into the heap. However, it cannot be set on fire so as not to provoke a fire. Instead of kerosene, you can use turpentine or scented vegetable oil, especially hemp oil.
- Good insect control is tobacco and tobacco ash. They can be insisted on water or simply sprinkled on anthills and paths along which ants move.
- You can almost completely destroy an anthill if you spread several bricks, pieces of any metal or large stones around it and pour them abundantly with manure infusion. After a few days, it is necessary to pick up objects and pour boiling water over the insects, while trying to pour hot water into the passages.
- Insects do not tolerate salt, so you should fill the ant heap with it well, trying to get it into the passages. Under the influence of rain, the salt will constantly eat away at the ants' dwelling from the inside and make them leave this place.
- A proven means of fighting ants is to treat their home, places of frequent visits, the paths along which they move, with a special solution. To do this, dilute 400 g of grated laundry soap and 2 tbsp. l. carbolic acid, and then add 10 tbsp. l. kerosene.
- To protect fruit trees from insect infestation, you can dig a small groove 3-5 cm deep around each trunk and fill it with water. Ants are not able to overcome water obstacles, the tree trunk will be safe.
- You can tie the bottom of the barrel with a thick cloth soaked in carbolic solution. It is good to use thick linseed oil on the bottom of the tree.
- After watering, it is recommended to lay out dense rags dipped in kerosene or turpentine under the berry bushes.
- Traps can be set in insect habitats. Old sweet jam is used as bait. For 500 g of delicacies, add 20 g of fresh yeast and 5 g of boric acid.
A radical way to combat insects is to remove the anthill away from the summer cottage. To do this, after sunset, when all the ants gather in the dwelling, you need to dig out a bunch with a large shovel, transfer it to a large container and immediately take it away from the garden. The place of the former anthill must be carefully treated with a large amount of boiling water and covered with herbs that repel these insects. You can use a solution of bleach for treatment.
