Good afternoon, my reader. Some inexperienced gardeners believe that conifers do not need care in winter. After all, pines, fir trees and junipers growing in the forest, no one shelters for the winter, and they do just fine without human help. This is a misconception. The conifers in our gardens are different from those that grow in nature. Most often these are artificially bred plants. They are more susceptible to frost, rain, and the scorching rays of the sun. They need the same care as other plants.

In spring, at a temperature of more than 10 degrees Celsius, the needles can be treated with preparations that protect against burns (Lignohumate, Zircon, Epin Extra).

  • In winter, you can safely remove dead or dry twigs, but do not forget to treat the cut with a fungicide.
  • Although conifers are usually winter-hardy, they still need shelter in abnormally cold winters in order to prevent freezing. Spunbond, burlap or other material will work fine.
  • Glaciation is also dangerous for conifers. If frost suddenly hits after rain, frost will form on the branches. It can lead to the fact that the tree simply breaks. Therefore, even in the fall, you need to tie it with ropes or cover it with a special net, just not too tight. This will help withstand the harsh winter trials.
  • Heavy snowfalls are also dangerous. It is necessary to shake off excess snow from the plants so that they do not break under its weight.
  • In spring, the shelter can be removed only when all the snow has melted and the ground has thawed by 15-20 cm. In early spring, conifers need to be fed with compost or special fertilizers such as Forte Bona, Pokon. The granules are buried in the soil near the plant to a depth of several centimeters.
  • Particular attention should be paid to conifers growing in pots. With the onset of frost, they must be taken to a room with a temperature of no higher than 5 degrees. Watering is carried out 2 times a month so that the soil in the flowerpot does not dry out.
If you take care of your conifers in winter, they will survive the cold season just fine.
