"Caspian Fort Boyard": what a strange abandoned building really is.

In the Caspian Sea off the coast of Dagestan, at a distance of 2.7 kilometers from land, you can see a mysterious building in the middle of frolicking waves. It rises on the horizon and from the side resembles the famous Fort Boyard, which in turn is located off the coast of France. In fact, not a fort was built in the Caspian Sea, but a secret factory workshop.

In 1931, at a meeting of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, a decision was made to build a new plant No. 182 18 km from Makhachkala. The enterprise will be founded in 1932 and later will receive the name Dagdizel. Today this plant remains the oldest and one of the largest in Dagestan. During the Soviet era, the enterprise was a leading plant for the production of diesel engines and torpedoes (as well as the necessary equipment).

In 1934, the construction of another workshop began. It received the designation "No. 8" and later became one of the most secret places of the Soviet pre-war "defense". Construction work was completed by 1938, and the enterprise immediately began to work on the development, creation and testing of torpedo weapons for ships and submarines. It was here that the most formidable anti-submarine and anti-ship ammunition was created by Soviet engineers.

A distinctive feature of workshop No. 8 was that it was erected right in the middle of the Caspian Sea, 2.7 kilometers from the coast. In order to build the plant, it was necessary to first create a foundation pit, and then install a stone foundation, on which the secret workshop was installed. In the middle of the sea, a department of the plant was built not only for secrecy, but also for ease of testing.
The height of the workshop above the foundation (including the tower) is 42 meters. The total working area is 5 thousand square meters. In addition to the shop itself in the department of the Dagdizel plant a dormitory, library, cinema, recreation area, dining room, elevator, test room was built laboratory.

Interesting fact: not only torpedoes were tested in the laboratory of workshop No. 8 Dagdizel.

Many other weapons produced throughout the country were tested here.
The secret factory worked throughout the war. In 1941 alone, more than 3200 steam-gas torpedoes were fired here. German intelligence knew about the enterprise. Although the front line did not reach the Caspian Sea, the Luftwaffe regularly bombed the region. The 8th shop also got it from the air raids. Despite this, the plant continued to operate.

Everything changed in the 1950s. Steam-gas torpedoes, as a type of effective weapon, were rapidly becoming obsolete. The factory workshop and laboratory began to gradually lose their relevance. In 1966, the division was finally closed as unnecessary, and the testing laboratory was moved to the Black Sea. All documents were archived by the KGB or destroyed. Ten years later, a fire broke out in the closed shop. After that, it was decided to use the remnants of the 8th workshop for training firing.

Today the "eight" is abandoned, gradually collapsing under the influence of time and elements. This place has become a real Mecca for many fans of abandoned Soviet factories and other extreme lovers.
