There is an opinion that at the current rate of technical progress, machines will begin to completely replace human labor in a greater number of areas of activity. And more recently, the list of already existing professions for robots has been replenished with another vacancy. Now in one of the Swedish ports, all the work of transporting freight containers from one terminal to the other will be made by cars, or rather Volvo Vera trucks, which do not have a cab for driver.
This Volvo Trucks Vera development was presented to the public last year. Mikael Karlsson, Head of Autonomous Solutions at Volvo Trucks, spoke about the idea of creating a robotic truck, as well as its applications: “Autonomous Zero-emission, low-noise vehicles will very soon revolutionize logistics and bring tremendous benefits to both society and business ".
The Volvo Vera truck is an all-wheel drive electric robotic vehicle that does not have a driver's cab. It was designed around transmissions and batteries. This technology is well known to developers, as it has been used for a long time and quite successfully in Volvo's serial electric trucks.
Also, in order to accomplish the tasks set by the machine, it was equipped with a cargo chassis and fasteners. They were made versatile, so that the low four-wheeled truck can tow standard type trailers on which sea or aircraft containers are installed. The scope of these machines is still limited to the transportation of goods on the territory of industrial enterprises, seaports and similar institutions.
In addition, the developers of the Volvo Vera provided a mechanism for the exchange of data between robotic trucks that work in the same enterprise or organization. All information that is transferred between machines is stored in a special cloud service. Such an "upgrade" optimizes logistic flows as efficiently as possible, minimizes the delay in the delivery of goods, and also reduces the development of the resource of the vehicles themselves. All this significantly saves the costs of operating the robots and the overall costs of the employing company.
Volvo Trucks Vera has begun testing its robotic trucks in collaboration with the Swedish transport company DFDS. She handles cargo transportation between the seaport and the Gothenburg logistics center. The companies are jointly conducting a pilot program to introduce robots into operation: at the port, Volvo Vera machines transport freight containers from one terminal to another.

Volvo Trucks Vera commented on these events: “We see the collaboration with DFDS and the start of the Vera trials as a very important milestone in this direction. The tests have already begun and over time we will gradually remove the speed limits that are currently used in truck control systems. "
