5 newfangled "capricious" options, which are better to refuse when choosing a used car

Modern cars are getting more and more interesting functions. However, sometimes progress is indeed ahead of its time. And the most important thing is the consumer's pocket. Especially when it comes to purchasing a car not in the salon of an authorized dealer, but in the secondary market. The sad practice is that a serious number of useful functions are also famous for their "capriciousness" and quick wear.

1. "Stop-start"

This system is designed to allow the driver to better save fuel in the city. To do this, the "smart" mechanism turns off the engine as soon as the machine stops and turns it on when the clutch pedal is depressed. This thing really allows you to save a lot of fuel, but all this has a downside.

Like many modern technologies, Stop & Start is a very capricious thing. Moreover, due to the specifics of the work, this system significantly accelerates the wear of the car starter, and this is already fraught with a whole drag of unpleasant problems. "Stop-start" also has a negative effect on battery operation.

Of course, not all used cars are equipped with such suspensions, but their number is constantly growing from year to year. Despite the many advantages of these mechanisms, they also have a couple of serious disadvantages. Firstly, this is a rather high indicator of capriciousness, especially if the previous owner did not bother too much about the responsible exploitation of his “swallow”. Secondly, it is the high cost of repairs and consumables. In other words, it’s a headache.

3. Dual clutch

The robotic dual-clutch transmission shifts much faster. The switching process is much more comfortable than on the classic "automatic". Also, a car with a similar clutch has more power output. However, there are also disadvantages to the dual clutch. First of all, these are increased costs. Unfortunately, the dual-mass flywheel and disc clutches will have to be changed too often.

4. Direct fuel injection

Helpful but expensive. | Photo: msvlad.com.

Another great technical solution that brings a lot of problems in used cars. Direct injection makes the machine more economical, cleaner and more powerful. However, if you drive at low revs, a large amount of carbon deposits builds up in the engine very quickly. Approximately every 100 thousand kilometers with such an injection, the nozzle will need to be cleaned. Of course, when driving in the city, the need for appropriate maintenance can arise much more often.

5. Turbine engine

Power to pay dearly for. ¦Photo: master-x.com.

Whether a motor with a turbine or a motor with several turbochargers is both a headache and a frustration in equal measure. In any case, when it comes to buying a similar car on the used market. Such units have a very complex design. And as it often happens - the more complex the design, the less the unit's resource. In addition, motors of the above-mentioned kind are distinguished by high maintenance and repair costs.
