Everyone has already forgotten the days when Toyota made impressive cars. So the new generation of their famous crossover RAV4 was supposed to become an ordinary Toyota of the new millennium. - a boring carriage, the popularity of which is due to the belief of buyers in the "indestructibility" of Japanese cars stamps. In general, this is how it turned out, with one exception. And the name of this exception is the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid.

The RAV4 model appeared back in 1994 and immediately gained popularity. It was positioned by the brand itself as a youth car for outdoor activities. At the same time, the car was quite practical and even then embodied all the delights of a crossover. Since then, the car has changed five generations. And with each generation, the charisma of the car, as well as of the brand itself, faded more and more. And in 2018, the fifth generation of the RAV4 was presented at the New York Auto Show. It all started as usual, the car even made it to the list of CAR OF THE YEAR 2020 contenders. And that's where the problems started. During the test conducted by the competition jury, the car failed the moose test.

Note: moose test - testing cars for stability during extreme maneuvers. The test simulates a detour around a sudden obstacle and shows the quality of the vehicle chassis tuning.

Experts also noted the discrepancy between the declared power of 199 hp and dynamics, a weak level of comfort, as well as a terrible multimedia system. In general, nothing surprising - this is Toyota, they will still take it. But it seems that Japanese engineers have found a way to respond to critics, and at the Los Angeles Auto Show they presented a version of the RAV4 called Prime, at least the characteristics of which are impressive.
And so, what kind of version is this.

Under the hood of the "premium" RAV4 is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, in conjunction with which electric motors will work. As a result, the total power of the power plant will be 302 hp, which will allow the "rafik" to exchange the first hundred for 5.8, which is at the level of "hot" hatchbacks.

The car has four-wheel drive, but the rear wheels are not connected in any way with the engine - they are turned by an electric motor. Like the Prius hybrid firstborn, the RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid that can drive on pure electric power for up to 62 km. And, perhaps, the most impressive characteristic of the car is the combined cycle consumption, which the manufacturer claims at 2.6 l / 100. And this is with such a high power. The numbers are really impressive. But...

The manufacturer does not announce any modifications to the chassis, but as we figured out above, the car has huge problems with this, and even standard cars behave quite dangerously in corners. What will happen with this version, which is heavier than the standard ones, is unknown. We will find out when the first cars go on sale, and this will happen in the summer of 2020. Will the car be sold in Russia? It is unlikely, because even the usual RAV4 with all its shortcomings, which is also produced at the brand's plant in St. Petersburg, will not add up prices. They ask for 2.6 million rubles for him, how much should such a super-technological modification cost then. We do not know this, but absolutely for sure - more than Russian buyers will be willing to spend on it. And the magic of the Toyota brand won't help here. Or will it help?
