For filming scenes with a Soviet fighter in the film "Only Old Men Go to Battle", the domestic Yak-18P was used. This is a training machine, which was created by domestic designers in 1946. Subsequently, the Yak-18 became the basis for the creation of a huge number of very different, including sports aircraft.

In the film, the Yak-18P was thoroughly disguised as a Soviet fighter of the Second World War La-5, which was created by designers in 1942. The fighter was produced until 1944. In total, about 9,920 units were produced. "Grimm" machines were carried out with the help of veteran pilots.

In addition to the Yak-18P in the film "Some old men go to battle", another plane was shot as the "Maestro" machine. True, he was present only in those scenes and takes that were not included in the final version of the film for various reasons. It was a real Yak-3 combat aircraft, a model of a single-engine fighter created in 1943. The first Yak-3 entered the troops in July 1944 in the 91st Fighter Regiment. Since the action of the film took place in 1943, they decided to abandon the scenes with the Yak-3. However, if desired, the Yak-3 could well be made up for the older Yak-1, but for some reason the filmmakers did not want to go this way.
