Turboprop engines: why they are no longer installed on the tail of an aircraft

If we compare passenger liners of the second half of the XX century with modern ones, then the most attentive comrades will notice that in older aircraft you can more often see a couple of engines in the tail section cars. At the same time, this layout method is not used in modern aviation. What is the reason for this decision of engineers and designers?

Why are turboprop engines no longer installed on the tail of an aircraft? Strictly speaking, they have not ceased to be installed, but in general they have never been installed. Engines that are installed on passenger liners in the tail section are correctly called turbofan. Turboprop engines were always placed only under the wings.

However, let's return to the main question: do power units no longer hang on the tails of modern liners? Yes this is true. Or at least, almost so. In modern airplanes, this type of layout is almost never used; engines in the tail can only be seen in some very old machines.

The reasons for the rejection of turbofan engines in the tail are purely technical in nature. The practice of use has shown that for the installation of units of this kind, a T-shaped tail of the wing is required, which in turn also has a number of disadvantages. In particular, T-wings are more prone to corkscrew. In addition, a very strong fuselage is needed to install the engines in the tail, and in many aircraft models, water ballast has to be made to compensate for the heavier rear part of the liner. Finally, the tail-mounted engines are much more difficult to maintain.

It is for these reasons that today, in the vast majority of cases, turbofan motors are placed under the wings. This design is simpler, more reliable and safer. And the plane is also easier to maintain. The only real problem with these turbines is that they can suck debris off the strip. However, in terms of a combination of factors, the design layout without aggregates in the tail is considered better.
