How to properly sharpen a bayonet shovel so as not to toil in the beds

The summer season begins, which means it's time to check the condition of the garden tools. First of all, bayonet shovels, which are one of the most important devices in the arsenal of a summer resident. Before you start using them again, it would not be superfluous to check the sharpness of the working edge. This is because working with a dull or even poorly sharpened shovel will be very difficult. It is not as difficult to bring the instrument to the necessary condition as it might seem.

Sharpening your bayonet shovel before the summer cottage season is not only an important necessity, but also a kind of ritual! A shovel with a blunt working blade will be extremely bad at coping with its direct duties, which means that additional time and effort will have to be spent on digging. In order for nothing like this to happen, the shovel should be brought into a state of proper condition. To do this, you need some kind of tool: several files with different grain sizes and a vice.

The first thing to do is to clean the blade of the shovel from dirt, if for some reason it has remained on the tool from the last season. When the tool is clean, you can proceed directly to sharpening it. For safety and ease of use, it is best to securely fix the shovel with a bench vise. The shovel is sharpened with ordinary files. In this case, only the leading edge is machined.

Sharpening is done from the edge of the blade to the handle of the shovel. It is necessary to adjust the blade thickness to 0.5-0.6 mm. For this we work with several files. First, we process the blade with the coarsest one and gradually start up the files with ever finer grain. It is important to ensure that the blade is uniformly sharpened along its entire length. The file moves at an angle of approximately 40-45 degrees. In this case, the width of the processed edge should not exceed 5 mm, otherwise the shovel will quickly become dull.
