Why some firewood gives more heat than others: how to choose the right one

Ever had to think about why some firewood heats so much better than others? It is quite obvious that it is all about the type of wood. However, how to understand what kind of firewood should be prepared for the next season and which ones are better to take with you to nature, for example, in order to make a fire or put up a grill for frying meat. In fact, everything in this matter is quite transparent and simple.

In fact, everything is extremely simple. Only two factors affect the amount of heat given off during the combustion of firewood: weight and degree of drying. Let's start with the latter: the better the wood is dried, the better it burns and the more heat it will eventually give. Everything here is simple and clear, it is quite obvious that there is no need to give unnecessary explanations on this score. Captain Obvious suggests that trying to melt and keep warm with raw wood is not a good idea.

Now for the mass. The greater the mass of the combusted fuel, the more heat in most cases will come out. However, this is where the fun begins. As one could easily assume, different wood species have different fiber density. This means that, other things being equal, logs from different breeds will often have significantly different density from each other.

It is enough to compare the same logs from some oak and pine. Thus, we draw a personal conclusion: the heavier and drier the wood, the more heat it will give.
Now, with regard to specifics. It is worth explaining which types of wood are best to harvest as firewood. Birch and oak are in the first place. They provide the most heat output and are ideal for ovens that need to heat up quickly and to the absolute maximum. Need to heat a sauna? Then stock up
birch and oak, however, these rocks may be "superfluous" for heating the house.

Further - spruce. It burns well and quickly, due to the presence of resin pockets, it bursts fairly. Well suited for heating baths and houses. However, spruce almost does not give good charcoal, so it is definitely not suitable for refueling the grill and cooking food. We are following Pine - a good wood, capable of giving a lot of heat, but only if it has been perfectly dried. The only negative is a large amount of smoke, burning and soot at the time of combustion.

Finally, do not forget about aspen. Of all of the above, it gives the least heat, but it burns out well and does not clog the chimney too much. Actually the best choice for home heating. However, aspen is absolutely not suitable for a bath, it will be rather weak.
