How the Superweapon "Metal Storm" shots per minute, and why it didn't get into the army

Throughout its glorious history, mankind has now and then created truly creepy things to destroy their own kind. The apotheosis of the development of the idea of destruction today is nuclear weapons. However, the talented gunsmithing engineers decided not to stop there. Much simpler, but no less exotic types of weapons are being created in our century. Take Metal Storm, for example.

The history of the development of weapons is rightfully one of the richest, most intense and interesting. What people will not invent in order to destroy their own kind even a little more effectively. The development of the monstrous arsenal does not stop in our time. Moreover, it was at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries that perhaps the most interesting “creative reworkings” of the well-known tools of destruction appeared. Take the Metal Storm family of weapons.

When people talk about Austria, the last thing they think about is weapons. This approach is frankly undeserved, because it is in this country that very interesting specimens are made. The already mentioned "Metal Storm" gun was created there in 2012. In fact, the "storm" is a fairly large family, which includes specific machine guns and even grenade launchers. The initial goal of the project is to increase the rate of fire to unprecedented values.

There was even a manual modification. | Photo: udachnyj-enot.com.ua.

The Austrian engineers fulfilled their task in full. Today's best modification of the Metal Storm machine gun has a rate of fire of up to 1,620,000 rounds per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 95 m / s. True, such indicators are achieved not so much by increasing the speed of the ammunition, but by the number of barrels and the way they are charged. For example, in the first modification of the wonderful Austrian machine gun there were as many as 36 rifled barrels for a 9 mm pistol cartridge. The second modification already had 180 barrels.

In addition to quantity, "Metal Storm" also sets the bar high with technology. The fact is that when firing, the method of electric impulse ignition of charges is used. And this, in turn, helps to keep from 3 to 6 rounds in the barrel, depending on the type of the latter. Shooting control is carried out using an electronic circuit.

In practice, the Metal Storm has proved to be a rather impractical device, consuming too much ammunition and requiring significant maintenance costs. Why such a monster might be needed is unclear. Therefore, this weapon remained in the rank of "interesting experiment". The most interesting thing is that there is also a modification of the "Storm" for 40-mm grenades.
