Two hundred numbers saddest load the Soviet army received during the Afghan war. Then the body of the dead soldiers were transported home in special galvanized coffins. This practice is so firmly stuck in the minds of people and speech that "cargo 200" has become a household name for all the war dead. A good question would be: why bother to galvanize the coffins?
1. It always has been
In fact, the dead bodies away from the homeland war have long been transported in specially treated zinc coffins. However, prior to the conflict in Afghanistan, the majority of Soviet citizens are not even aware of how the transportation of bodies. The number "200" in this case is the average mass of one of the coffin. An adult male weighs 80-100 kg, and the coffin itself was quite weighty.
