Are Filament Lamps That Good?

  • Dec 14, 2020

A filament lamp (FL) belongs to the category of special type LED lamps. Outwardly, it is very similar to an incandescent lamp (LN). The same glass transparent bulb, but inside it is not a tungsten filament, but LEDs that look like filaments. From the English language, the word "filament" just means "thread". When the light is off, such a lamp can be easily distinguished from the LN by its yellow tint and the shape of the LED filaments.

At the same time, FLs are much more efficient in operation than their predecessors.

A bit of history

LED lamps are not always compatible with traditional interiors, so Japanese engineers decided to create a semiconductor light source that looks like a regular light bulb. More than 10 years ago, we presented the first so-called retro lamp using modern technologies. But due to its weak power, the product did not become in demand.

In 2013, several companies from China offered improved PL with a power of 85 W. They turned out to be many times more practical than the classic versions of matrix LED bulbs. After that, they began to actively use the innovation for the decoration of premises.

The main advantages

  • Due to the special design, the widest angle of light scattering (almost 360 degrees) is provided. Space illumination occurs evenly, which cannot be said about standard LED lamps.
  • The absolute transparency of the bulb significantly increases the energy efficiency of the device. In conventional SLs, translucent flasks are used.
  • During operation, LEDs get very hot, which further reduces the level of light output. The filaments are designed to distribute heat evenly across the LEDs. The bulb itself does not overheat, but heat quickly spreads along its walls, and light is scattered in the room. Thanks to this design, high power is supplied to the filament lamps without the risk of failure.
  • Suitable for providing lighting in a home, cafe, shop, public institution. Filaments go well with chandeliers, lamps, open shades in various styles. They are safe even when installed near ceilings that cannot tolerate high temperatures.
  • No heavy radiator.

Minuses

  1. If the elements burn out, they cannot be repaired.
  2. The flask is very fragile because it is made of glass.
  3. In cheap models, a too simple rectifier is used instead of a high-quality driver.
  4. Some Chinese manufacturers make lamps of poor quality, the wattage and service life may not correspond to the generally accepted parameters.
  5. Increased ripple rate and high cost.

FL varieties

  • They are found in several types depending on the design of the threads and the appearance. If very bright lighting is required (for example, on the street or in the office) - use straight threads.
  • To provide soft, comfortable, dim lighting in the bedroom or bar - use coiled threads. The special coating in the flask creates a special glow.
  • Using such models as decorative lighting will create a unique impression. Light bulbs with a transparent bulb will perfectly complement classic, modern or vintage interiors. Candle-shaped options with soft light add a cozy feel to the living room.

A variety of shapes and sizes of FL will satisfy the needs of any customer, everyone is able to find their own suitable option. However, you should pay special attention to the quality of the components.
