An accent wall can both decorate and refresh the interior of a room, and, conversely, spoil it. How can you use this technique correctly to diversify the room and achieve a wow effect?
Designer Svetlana Olenburg offered 7 simple recommendations that will help you turn a contrasting wall into one of the main advantages of your interior.
7. Focus on the “right” wall
It is best to contrast the wall that first opens to the eyes when entering the room. The basis is taken in quantity, and the emphasis should be distinguished by quality, that is, by saturation and by its advantageous location.
The bright wall should be the only one in the room. The accent should set off or strengthen the general tone with its intensity, but not try to enter into a fight with it on an equal footing.
6. Sometimes it is enough to emphasize only part of the wall.
In the living room, it is recommended to allocate a recreation area using this technique. A good solution would be to accent the wall behind the sofa, if it is pushed close.
However, if the footage of your living room is quite impressive, it will be redundant to make one of the walls completely contrasting. In this case, it is enough to emphasize only a small part of it. For example, a place by a bookcase, a mini-cabinet, or a fireplace area if available.
There is no such variety of options in the bedroom - it is recommended to highlight the wall behind the head of the bed. Again: if the room is spacious enough or the bed is pushed against an elongated wall, it is better not to get carried away and mark only the area directly at the headboard or next to it.
5. Adjust the strength of your accent
If it is enough for you to shade a calm space a little and diversify it a little, do not resort to too bright colors. In this case, for a contrasting wall, you should choose a shade that echoes the main tone of the room. You don't have to complicate the palette at all: a good solution would be to dilute the interior with an eye-catching ornament or texture.
If you want to add dynamics and achieve a real "wow" effect, then, on the contrary, do not be afraid to use bright opposite colors.. However, do not forget about the rule - quality, not quantity. And, of course, remember about color matching.
A bright eye-catching accent in a calm interior can be a picture with rich colors. But in this case, you need to look at the size of the picture in relation to the wall and not add anything next to it.
4. Play around with visuals
An elongated, narrow room can be grouped more cozily by leaving a warm accent on the far small wall. You should not use this technique for a large wall - this way you can further narrow the space.
On the contrary, the use of a cold palette visually expands the room. Therefore, you can use green, blue accents for the elongated wall. In this way, you will make the room more voluminous.
You can also use a larger-scale technique - highlight the architectural volume (column, 3-4 walls of the protruding room) with color.
3. A contrast wall is not only about color
The accent can be made not only with other wallpaper or paint, but also with an unexpected texture. If this fits into the overall interior concept, try on brickwork, 3D panels or decorative tiles.
There are a lot of various materials with which you can select one of the walls in the room. For example, in a nursery, you can use blackboard paint. Such a wall will become not only an interesting design solution, but also a spacious canvas for children's creativity.
2. An accent wall can be functional
Often this is not just a decorative technique, but also a means of zoning. Combine one with the other and highlight one of the areas in the living room with a contrasting wall - for example, a place for watching TV or a work corner.
This will visually transform one room into several rooms. Moreover, without walls, but with free borders.
1. Remember the design concept
Whatever relationship may be between the accent and main areas, they should fit together in the overall concept of your interior.
Therefore, the contrasting wall should not stand apart from other elements. No matter how bright and eye-catching it is.
Establish a connection between areas: If the accent wall is in clear contrast, support it with other similar but less intrusive details in the rest of the room.
