In this article, I want to talk about a device that not only carries out long-term root watering in hot weather, but also picks up excess moisture during rain. You can make it right in the country from an ordinary plastic bottle and fabric filler.
The tool that we will need is available to every owner. We need pliers, a safety pin, a sharp knife, or scissors. In addition, you will need one plastic bottle and a piece of dense natural fabric that absorbs water well. The latter can be replaced with another filler, but I will write about this later.
For the bottle to absorb and release moisture, it must have multiple drainage holes. They are made with a hot pin. In order not to burn your fingers in the process, the latter should be held with pliers. The holes should be made all over the bottle. The more there are, the better.
Now we need to fill our bottle with absorbent cloth. This can be done through the neck, or by cutting the container into two parts. The fabric should be tamped tightly so that it takes up the entire free volume. The filler should fit snugly against the walls of the bottle, in which the holes were previously made.
Our device is ready. Now you need to carefully bury the bottle in the ground next to the cultivated plants. For root watering, fill the container with water and close it with a lid. In dry weather, the product will give off moisture for a long time, and during rain it will absorb excess.
For full-fledged root watering, you will need not one or even two such bottles. However, a system of such devices can maintain an optimal water balance for a long time.
The main disadvantage of such a product is the filler. Over time, natural fabric begins to rot and if it is not replaced in time, it will turn into a breeding ground for mold. To prevent this from happening, instead of fabric, you can use any other non-rotting material that retains moisture well. For example, small expanded clay is suitable for large bottles.
