Despite the fact that Schlumberger belongs to the Cactus, caring for him has not much in common with other representatives of this family. The Decembrist needs regular watering, complex fertilizing and annual pruning. It is about the latter that I would like to talk about in this short article.

I will say right away that the Decembrist can grow at home with practically no care. However, in this case, the plant will survive, which means that you can forget about the decorative look and lush flowering.

Why cut the Decembrist

Decembrist pruning is carried out not only to form the correct crown, but also to stimulate flowering. The thing is that the buds appear only on young shoots. To increase their number, you need to regularly remove the upper stem segments.

In addition, the procedure stimulates the growth and development of the plant, significantly extending its life.

When to prune

It is necessary to prune in the active growth phase, excluding the flowering period. Depending on the variety, this can be the first half of spring or summer. If the procedure is carried out immediately after flowering, you need to wait a period of rest for about a month. The Decembrist should not be disturbed during this period.

How to properly trim the Decembrist

Despite the fact that this procedure is called pruning, it should be done by hand. We don't need scissors and tongs. The segment to be removed is gently separated from the stem by rotating movements. Later, a couple of new segments will appear in place of the deleted part. This will make the crown more magnificent, and the future flowering is more abundant and more beautiful.

Keep in mind that two new shoots will appear in the place of the deleted segment. Avoid shading and thickening.

An important point

Such procedures cause stress to the plants, therefore, before starting pruning, make sure that the Decembrist is completely healthy and is in a phase of active growth. Otherwise, you risk damaging the flower.
