The accumulator told how to choose the right battery with the help of scales

  • Dec 16, 2020

Last fall I drove to the accumulator, asked him to check the six-year old battery of the grant car - "Akkom", the state of the lead battery and whether it will last the coming winter. After performing certain manipulations with his cunning devices, and measuring the density with a hydrometer, he delivered the verdict:

-"Good batteries went to the vase conveyor, for many they run for a long time and you run off this winter"- Summed up the man of retirement age.

- "If he dies, he stops turning the starter, which battery would you recommend?" Asked him a question with curiosity in his eyes.

And he told me and I will show you.

I already bought a new battery on his sly advice. It remains only to install it. But before doing this, I decided to clean the terminals with zero sandpaper. Having rolled it into a tube, thereby sliding it along the lead surface from the inside.

I brought grease to the car, lithol 24, I wanted to apply it to the contacts. And then changed his mind, why lubricate? Contacts do not oxidize... And so it will do.

After the junction of the lead battery and the wires were stripped and shone like chrome balls, I installed the contacts in their places.

By the way, the voltage of a fresh battery without load was 12.53 volts. And when installed on a car and with the ignition on (the fluorescent lamps were on), the voltage dropped to 11.9 volts.

I follow the advice of the accumulator

Armed with his advice, I went to the spare parts store, looked at the presence of batteries. The assortment was not very large, but there is plenty to choose from.

I asked the seller to help me measure the mass of the batteries. They didn't understand me at first, but after telling the idea, they went to meet me with a grin. I decided to weigh the first AKOM 60 and its weight was 14 kg 480 grams. And they write on the battery Weight no more. 15.5 kg. Where did the kilogram of lead go?

The hardest for my car, according to the seller, is Tyumen accumulator Premium. Well, I weighed it too. And its mass was equal 16 kg. 450 grams despite the fact that the manufacturer declared its weight 16 kg 800 grams. In this case, they did not report a pound.

Decided to stop at it. It turned out to be the heaviest battery in the same price range of all. With a running start, plus or minus 800 rubles. I took it for 4200 rubles.

Advice and rationale

If you have to buy a battery, then take the heaviest one, it contains more lead, respectively, the area of the plates on which the "coating" is held is larger. The likelihood that it will crumble due to extreme loads, for example in winter in frost and will disable the battery for this reason, is minimal. Such advice from the accumulator, and what do you think about this?
