1 Some design rules
- 1.1 One room
- 1.2 Additional design elements
- 2 Conclusion
More and more often you can find in modern apartments the combination of two rooms, differing in their functional purpose, where a special type of interior is created for them.
For example, if you disassemble the partition between the kitchen and the adjacent bedroom with your own hands, or hall, then you get a living room connected to the catering unit, where at the same time there are visual differentiation.

Some design rules
One room
Visual separation with flooring
-
Let's say you have a combined kitchen-living room of 14 sq m - how do you intend to place accents, because the name of the room itself already indicates zones that are clearly opposite in functionality.
Will you leave both the work and leisure sectors indistinguishable from each other? Even if you really want this, then it is almost impossible to implement this using design.
Medium kitchen-living room
-
The dimensions of our apartments are of great importance, and a kitchen-living room of 10 sq m, not delimited by visual methods, will look simply like a large dining room, even with ultra-modern furniture.
Do not forget that the kitchen is always a working area, and the living room is a place of rest and this must be visible, otherwise what is said above will happen.
Small kitchen-living room
-
There are no clear design instructions for combined rooms at all, so it is important for you just to understand what such a room is, more precisely, what it is intended for.
Imagine a comfortable seating area, most likely with upholstered furniture, where a stove is always at hand and cutting table, but this work area is located, as it were, aside, leaving priority for the sector recreation. -
And so, for example, you have a kitchen-living room of 13 sq m, which needs to be decorated in a modern style - what can be done for this?
As you saw in the photo above, you can delimit the space with a floor, in the work area the kitchen area by installing ceramic tiles, and in the rest of the space a laminate or wooden parquet. In this case, the area for cooking food can be raised by a few centimeters - this will not only be a design move, but, possibly, a technical solution to the problem.
Using a semi-arch to visually divide zones
-
If, for example, you need to design a kitchen-living room of 14 sq m, then you can use a semi-arch or some other geometric shape running along the ceiling and possibly occupying a part of the wall.
Spotlights are usually inserted into such decorative border zones, which, moreover, create a light decoration.
Bar counter in the kitchen-living room
-
One of the most common techniques for visually dividing space in kitchen-living room is a bar, which not only serves as a decoration, but is also practically applicable as a table, as well as a place for bedside tables.
The material from which such a partition is made can be very different - stone, wood, plastic, drywall and ceramic tiles. Of course, the price of such a rack and its appearance will correspond to the material.
Additional design elements
Using a fireplace in the interior
- Even if you need to design a kitchen-living room of 12 sq m, then in such an area you can fit a fireplace, which will be a decorative element. For this purpose, special electrical devices are sold that simulate the burning of wood and even smoke. Such an element can become the main element of the living room decor, focusing on itself the main attention.
- But a fireplace can be made not only as a decorative decoration - in private houses or cottages, you can use real draft and burn natural firewood. There is also such an opportunity on the upper floors of apartment buildings and houses where stove heating was previously used. But if you want to implement such a project not in the private sector, it would not hurt you to come to an agreement with the appropriate authorities (firefighters, architect, house management) so that there are no problems.
It is better to choose shades that are close in color.
- Another important factor for design of the combined kitchen and living room is the color scheme that you can see in the video clip, which is demonstrated here. Tastes, of course, are different for everyone, but the most successful design works are usually those that use similar shades or colors that are adjacent to the nanometer scale.
White is neutral in relation to other shades
- In any color combinations, white is acceptable - it does not detract from other shades and even emphasizes them, moreover, whiteness removes objects most of all, visually increasing the space. Also neutral to other combinations of black and gray colors, but they make the room smaller, and in large quantities can depress the psyche.
Council. It is possible and necessary to divide the space in the kitchen, combined with the living room, with the help of light.
So, for the kitchen area, bright lamps are needed that sufficiently illuminate the desktop and stove, in addition there will also be no superfluous decorative lighting in the form of recessed point lighting devices.
The living room area should be highlighted with soft light that does not cut the eye and for this you can use chandeliers, dish-shaped shades and sconces. But even here, spotlights used for decoration will not be an obstacle.
Conclusion
There are many design moves and materials for decorating such premises, but the price of your efforts will not be due to the cost of materials, but from their skillful use. Use all the tips given here and live beautifully!
