A well-designed kitchen project with high-quality fittings and thoughtful internal filling is comfort and convenience for those who use it. And the facades should provide a positive perception, comfort, good mood of those present.
If you are a fan of modern style, then painted MDF kitchens are just what you need.
Kitchen with glossy painted facades
Sometimes such facades are called enameled, since polyurethane enamel is used for their decorative finishing. But the point is not in the name, but in the fact that they really look luxurious, very modern and go well with kitchen appliances.
Material features
As the name suggests, painted MDF is a sawdust board covered with a layer of paint. Now let's take a closer look at how it is made, and what properties it acquires.
What is MDF
If we compare MDF with chipboard (chipboard), then it is made from much smaller sawdust, which are held together between themselves not harmful epoxy resins, but lignin and paraffin by pressing under high pressure and temperature.
Lignin is a substance that is released when wood is heated. Thus, the material can be considered absolutely natural and environmentally friendly.
MDF boards
It is interesting. Translated from German MittelDichteFazerplatte (MDF) sounds like a medium density slab. The Russian abbreviation MDF is a fine-dispersed fraction. Both names equally accurately reflect the structure of this material.
Today MDF is gaining popularity and crowding out other wood-like materials on the market. This is due to its environmental friendliness and flexibility to any type of processing.
It is believed that it even surpasses natural wood in terms of mechanical characteristics and moisture resistance. But due to the fact that the production of MDF in Russia is still poorly established, its price is kept at a fairly high level.

Painted facades
Such kitchen facades and panels are produced according to the following scheme:
- Board preparation: cutting to size, sanding, priming and sanding again.
- Application of paint in several layers with complete drying and sanding of each layer.
- Varnish application.
- Finishing polishing.
In numerous photos of kitchens made of this material, you can see that the facades can be not only even and smooth. Since MDF is a fairly plastic material that lends itself well to processing, the original board can be given a convex or concave shape, rounded edges, milled or embossed.
Curved (radius) facades
During subsequent painting, polyurethane enamel will uniformly fill all the recesses, sides and other volumetric details and create a continuous protective and decorative coating. This feature of the material is widely used by designers, bringing to life the most unusual and original ideas.
Colors and decors of kitchen fronts
Painted MDF kitchens are expensive. But they cost so much money, since they differ not only in quality and environmental friendliness, but also in an incredible variety of colors and shades that can be used with various special effects.
If we talk about colors, then the customer can choose any shade from the RAL catalog, making the entire kitchen in one color or choosing matching shades for the base and wall cabinets.
For reference. The depth and color saturation, as well as the resistance of facades to mechanical damage, depend on the number of layers of the finishing varnish.
As for the special effects, they are simply amazing.
- Chameleon. A painted MDF kitchen will constantly change shades depending on the lighting and angle of view.
Wall cabinets in the kitchen are painted with a chameleon effect
- Crackle, patina. These coatings give the facades an aged effect, allowing the use of modern materials to create a respectable classic kitchen.
Crackle effect is small cracks on the surface
- Mother of pearl, pearl. The manufacturing technology consists in applying an additional coating with certain optical properties to the painted facades. As a result, the surface acquires the ability to overflow color or hazy shimmer.
"Pearl" kitchen
- Metallic. When painting, special substances are added to the enamel that give the surface a metallic sheen.
You don't have to use special effects, but choose a simple matte or glossy finish. Some firms offer their clients such original design as a stencil drawing on the surface.

Advantages and disadvantages of painted facades
Before talking about the pros and cons of painted MDF kitchens, I would like to note that it depends on the quality of the facades. You can also determine it yourself, after carefully examining the proposed samples.
To do this, you need to bring the sample to your eyes so that it is between you and the light source, and its end is at the level of your eyes. In good light, the presence of defects is clearly visible. These can be roughness (the so-called shagreen), "craters", bubbles, punctures, etc.
Ideally, the surface should be as smooth as glass, and a small amount of defects are permissible only at the ends. If you find them on the front side of the facade, refuse to order the kitchen from this manufacturer. We hope that this manual will save you from purchasing low-quality products.
The quality of the material must be verified before placing an order.
Council. The mechanical method of painting is of higher quality. You can distinguish it from a manual one by examining the ends. They should clearly show clear straight lines of varnish, and not drop-like drips.
pros
- A large selection of colors and decors, the possibility of choosing them and ordering from the catalog.
- The ability to eliminate minor defects that have arisen during operation.
- Environmental friendliness of the material: it does not emit harmful substances into the air.
- Excellent resistance to high levels of humidity and temperature, their sudden changes.
- Resistant to microorganisms, fungi and mold.
- Resistant to detergents.
- Ease of maintenance: smooth enamelled surface is easy to clean, does not absorb dyes and odors.
Minuses
There are not many of them, but they are.
- Painted surfaces are afraid of mechanical damage: if handled carelessly, you can scratch or chip off a piece of enamel with your own hands. After that, the entire facade will have to be changed, since it cannot be repaired.
- The paint may fade if exposed to direct sunlight.
- Finally, the most serious and for many a decisive drawback is the high cost.
Conclusion
As you can see, kitchens made of painted MDF have much more advantages. And with proper planning and careful operation, the flaws may not appear. But the furniture will serve you for many years, without ceasing to like it and cheer you up.
