A few years ago, the bar was practically not considered as a possible detail in the design of the kitchen. The interior of the kitchen with a bar counter was considered something exotic - you can see it, but you should not do it in your home.

However, today many have already been able to appreciate not only the aesthetics of this design element, but also the convenience that it provides.

Bar counter: is it needed

Let's, nevertheless, figure it out - does the kitchen really need a bar counter, or is its installation just a tribute to fashion?

Despite all the seeming frivolity, the bar counter in the kitchen can perform several quite utilitarian functions:

  • Firstly, it can be used as a dining table, which significantly saves space. - and, as a rule, there is always a lack of it in the kitchen. Therefore, if you usually eat in the kitchen, then the bar counter will definitely be useful to you.

  • Secondly, due to its height, it greatly facilitates a number of cooking tasks. You don't have to bend over a low countertop, chop vegetables or do other non-physical work - you can do it on the bar counter while maintaining a comfortable body position.
  • In addition, a self-made folding bar counter is one of the most functional interior items. If necessary, we lay it out and get a comfortable work surface, and as soon as we don't need it, we fold it against the wall.

Bar counter in the interior

Classic layout

There are several design options for a kitchen with a bar counter. In this article we will look at the most common ones - and tell you how you can implement them as efficiently as possible.

Classic design

One of the most common options is the classic bar counter. It is a worktop made of laminated chipboard, acrylic stone or natural wood, installed either on bar consoles, or on a base of kitchen modules.

The optimal parameters of such a bar counter:

  • Height - 105-115 cm from floor level.
  • Length for one person - 50-65 cm.

Note! For such a fairly high bar counter, appropriate chairs are needed - high stools or half-chairs with a footrest and armrests.

To make the most of the design potential of the bar counter in the kitchen, it needs to be revived with classic bar accessories: glass hangers, chrome plated rails, etc. An excellent addition to such an element will be a coffee maker or a juicer installed on it - after all, we will not only drink alcoholic beverages ?!

The classic bar has only a few disadvantages:

  • firstly, it is a very high price;
  • and secondly - quite serious requirements for the area.

However, if these disadvantages are surmountable for you, feel free to implement the classic version.

Bar counter in a small kitchen

Folding rack in a small kitchen

If your kitchen does not differ in a large area, then the classic version will most likely have to be abandoned.

For a small kitchen, a small bar counter combined with a work surface is more suitable:

  • The counter will act both as a table for cooking and as a separate table, and will be in the guise of a bar only during the holidays.
  • This decor element should have a more modest size. Its maximum height is about 90 cm, and its length, as a rule, does not exceed a meter.
  • Another option for installing a bar in a small kitchen is to combine it with a window sill (as shown in the photo). In this case, quite often the bar counter is made folding - if necessary, it is installed on hidden supports and performs its functions.

Rack-windowsill

Note! Instructions for making a countertop combined with a window sill, as well as explanatory videos are posted in one of the articles in this section.

In the same way, you can install a bar counter at the junction of the kitchen with the loggia - in place of the old windowsill. In this case, you will receive not only a comfortable stand, but also a significant increase in the area of the kitchen itself.

Kitchen-studio with bar

The studio kitchen is another room in which the bar counter will be very appropriate. Thanks to the large area, you can install a full-fledged rack here without looking bulky.

Installing a bar counter in the kitchen-living room

On the contrary, the bar counter in the kitchen-studio or kitchen-living room will be the element that will help divide the space into zones. Having a counter will create a certain atmosphere that will be very appropriate during family celebrations.

It is advisable to install racks in a studio kitchen that are combined with both the living room furniture set and kitchen facades. In this case, the bar counter will act as a connecting link, creating a complete picture of the interior.

Kitchen island

If you are lucky, and the area of your kitchen allows it, we recommend that you take a closer look at such an option as an island counter. Such a bar counter is located in the center of the room, and you can approach it from both sides.

The features of the island rack are as follows:

  • Height - from 100 to 120 cm.
  • Width - 60-80 cm.
  • Length - at least 50 cm per family member.
  • It is also possible to combine an island-type stand with a working surface: on the first level there is a work stand (installation of a sink is possible), and on the second - a bar counter. In this case, however, access to the bar will be only from one side.

Stand-island, combined with the table

Naturally, installing such a kitchen island is not easy - but it is very convenient to use!

Of course everyone the suggested options are just recommendations. You can easily design your own interior of a dining room kitchen with a bar counter - and get an ergonomic, comfortable and beautiful room. The main thing is not to think that the bar counter is just a useless decorative element!
