How would you like to have a cozy and small place in city apartments where you can relax. You can create such a place in any room, the main thing is to correctly approach the solution of design problems. But this article will focus on the kitchen. Therefore, let's talk about the Provence style.
Delightful Provence-style kitchens: do it yourself - it's not a fantasy, but a reality!
This style direction has many faces, to be honest, each country has its own special flavor. For example, sunny France with its own Provence style.
What makes it different from other regions?
- There are roughly sanded beams on the ceiling;
- Light curtains on the windows;
- Wooden furniture;
- Painted dishes on the shelves;
- Chair cushions;
- Homespun napkins or tablecloths on tables;
- And the center of the whole composition is the hearth.
But if we compare Provence with other country styles, then it should be noted that there are special features that are unique to it:
- The color has pastel shades, often pure white.
- Wooden furniture, whitewashed and hand painted.
- An abundance of bright textiles with floral content.
- Neat and delicate forged products.
- This style is somewhat similar to minimalism.
- Large windows and small curtains.
And now the question is, do-it-yourself Provence style kitchen - is it possible? In our modern world, where it is easy to get information and the necessary materials for repairs, nothing is impossible. The main thing is to understand all the nuances that make up the Provence style.

Stages of creating a Provence style in the kitchen
First, it should be noted that creating such a style is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. But taking into account the developments of professionals and the availability of information, it allows such repairs to be carried out without involving outside masters.
Ceiling
As mentioned above, these are beams. It is clear that in a modern city apartment there are simply no beams, but it doesn't matter, they can be made from decorative polyurethane elements.
Today, in almost any hardware store, you can purchase products that are attached to the ceiling either with glue or on a special frame. The second option is more reliable, but more expensive.
Usually polyurethane beams are already painted in a certain color. Made as imitation of wood, the only thing that can distinguish them from each other is the shade and texture of a particular tree. Hanging them under the ceiling is not a problem, you can do everything yourself.
The interbeam surface of the ceiling is painted with white or beige water-based paint. This requires paint and a roller, the application technology is simple.
Walls
Wall decoration
Attention! It is best to use decorative plaster here. But it must be applied with minor defects. Let irregularities, glades be visible, if your house is brick, then nothing dangerous if brickwork will peep through the plaster.
In general, Provence style kitchen renovation is a kind of negligence in decoration.
If you are wary of plastering, then it is recommended to revet the walls with ceramic tiles like brick or stone. In some cases, wood trim can be used.
True, it will have to be treated with antiseptic solutions and protective varnish. A prerequisite is painting the boards, it is this nuance that distinguishes two country styles: Russian and French.

Floors
Here, as elsewhere, it is necessary to use only natural materials.
No
- Laminates;
- Linoleum;
- Synthetic tiles;
- And so on.
Ideally, this is a plank floor, besides, the boards should not be processed to the maximum. Ceramic tiles will look good, however, it will need to be modified a little - create chips, break off corners, in general, spoil a little.
Can parquet be used? By no means, Country style and this material are two incompatible things.
Kitchen floors
Doors and windows
As mentioned above, the main color of Provence is white. Therefore, the kitchen will have to install wooden doors and windows and paint them with white paint.
Doors can be artificially aged. For greater persuasiveness, you can create a painting on their surfaces, where flowers and climbing plants will be present.
But there are problems with windows in city apartments. French windows are openings from floor to ceiling. What to do?
It is possible to order windows with thin sashes that divide the structure into several vertical sections. This effect, purely visually, will create the illusion of tall windows.
Furniture
Everything should be natural here:
- Wood;
- Weaving from natural fibers or plants;
- Forged metal.
If you have doubts about the budget, whatever you say, and the price of such furniture is quite high today, then you still should not purchase furniture elements made of plastic. Also exclude nickel plated and glass accessories.
Remember what was said above, the Provence style is somewhat reminiscent of the Minimalism style. Therefore, there is only one way out - to reduce the amount of furniture in the kitchen.
White painted furniture
There is an easier option. You can simply paint the old headset white and paint it with flowers. Check out the photo above.
This is the perfect way out of this situation. In addition, if you age the surface of the headset with your own hands (craquelure method), then we can say that you have coped with the task.
Appliances
You can't get away from this, home appliances are simply necessary. So that it does not contrast with the whole interior, it is best to make it built-in and close it with doors. Let it seem that it is not in the old French cuisine.
But I would like to note one important point that concerns the functionality of this room.
Like any country kitchen, yours should be:
- well equipped (everything is in it);
- very comfortable (everything is at hand).
If you can achieve this, it means that neither the money nor the time is wasted.
Fabrics
Do-it-yourself kitchen decor in Provence style is not easy, you yourself could see this by reading this article. Whatever you say, but fabrics play an important role in design. It is a constant companion of this style.
What can you suggest to highlight Provence? There are mainly three types of textiles used:
- Chintz.
- Rough cotton.
- Bleached linen.
Floral motifs and all kinds of patterns are popular as always, but you can use striped or checkered fabric. Obligatory fabric accessories are tablecloths, napkins, chair and armchair covers, original small pillows for armchairs and a sofa, curtains with ruffles that can be tied up.
Optional accessories
Small accessories
Let's start with the lamps. The Provence style is considered bright and sunny, so the presence of all kinds of light sources will not hurt you.
Here you can use chandeliers, sconces, always forged or wooden. Only fabric shade with a flower.
Be sure to allocate space on the shelves for:
- vases,
- plate,
- baskets,
- boxes.
Attach an apron and gloves to the hooks. It should be noted, though, that the decor should not be cluttered. A small picture or clock will also be appropriate in a Provence style kitchen interior.
