It's no secret that in the East it is customary to eat food with chopsticks. At the same time, everyone wondered at least once why in Asia, for the most part, they do not use "traditional" cutlery like a fork and spoon. It is quite obvious that eating rice is more convenient with a spoon, and eating noodles is much better with an ordinary fork.
Archeology suggests that the first chopsticks appeared on the territory of China about 3 thousand years ago. The first written mention of sticks in Chinese documents dates back to around the 10th century BC. Why such a cutlery was invented in the East is not known for certain. It is believed that the appearance of sticks was justified by the specifics of the local cuisine, in particular, the methods of cooking meat, noodles and rice.
The fact is that almost all food in China (and neighboring states) was cooked on fire in large deep vats. This was also done so that already prepared food could be stored longer, including in a hot state. Accordingly, a suitable tool was required to extract the rice from the pot. It was obvious to local residents in the 1st millennium BC that the easiest way to get a lump of hot rice was with the help of improvised tongs - two wooden or bamboo sticks.

After that, a real cult began to form around the cutlery. Etiquette of using chopsticks, rules and even religious rituals appeared. The most expensive sticks were made of ceramics, glass, jade, silver and bone. Ordinary people were content with wooden and bamboo sticks.
