Good afternoon, my reader. Your own well in a summer cottage or personal plot, devoid of centralized water supply, is simply necessary. Its water is used for many different purposes, from cooking to watering. But in order for it to serve for a long time, and the water in it does not lose its qualities, it is necessary to properly care for it.

Very important:
- After completing the main stages of building a well, a fence should be installed around it, restricting access to it for animals and children. It is not recommended to take water treatments, do laundry or dishwashing on this fenced area.
- Lifting water should be carried out with one permanent bucket attached to a lifting chain or rope. No need to drink from it or wash your hands in it - so it is quite possible to bring a lot of unwanted microorganisms into the well.
- If the well is rarely used, it will not be superfluous to periodically get water out of it so that it does not stagnate and renew itself, or at least open the lid and ventilate it. Otherwise, the water will smell bad. A good option is to build an exhaust system of the type that is installed for ventilation of cellars.
- To protect the well from melt and rainwater, a blind area should be made around its perimeter.
Well care
Periodically, it is necessary to visually inspect it for the presence of debris, foreign objects, and wall contamination inside. This should be done at least once a year with a lantern lowered into it on a rope.
Well maintenance
- It must have a sturdy, dustproof and waterproof cover made of planks, sheet metal or plastic. It must be guaranteed to protect it from the ingress of foreign objects, leaves, various debris.
- If, nevertheless, something fell into the well or a bucket fell into it, they must be immediately removed with the help of a cat, hook, fixed on a rope, in some other way.
- It happens that an animal falls into the well. In this case, just getting it is not enough. It is imperative to pump out water from the well with a pump and thoroughly disinfect it.
Cleaning
Its frequency is not strictly defined. In many ways, its implementation depends on the degree of pollution of the water and walls. Many experts agree that such work should be done at least once a year.
The simplest cleaning tool is used: scraper, brush, broom. With their help, dirt, mold, moss are scraped off the walls of the well.
An important step in the event is putting in order the stones of the water filter.
It is best to take them out and rinse well. In some cases (severe pollution, destruction) it will be more expedient to replace them. These should be rocks of hard rock, not sedimentary (such as limestone), which quickly collapse.
At the end of cleaning the well, water is completely pumped out of it and disinfection work is started.
Disinfection
It is carried out using a special solution of bleach, which is poured into cold water and stirred. The proportions of the composition: 10-20 mg of lime is taken per liter of water. When the quenching process of the latter is completed, the solution is allowed to settle for some time. After that, it is poured into another container, trying to prevent sediment from entering it. The liquid is poured and used for disinfection.
It is carried out in several stages:
- Using a rag or brush, the surface of the walls of the drained part of the well is treated twice, with an interval of 2-3 hours.
- After waiting for the well to fill with water, a new solution is prepared (if the well, for example, has a volume of 1000 liters, then 10-20 g of lime will be required), which is poured into it and mixed with a pole.
- After waiting a day, the processing process is completely repeated.
- After letting chlorinated water settle for another day, it is completely pumped out. And this process is repeated several times, until the chlorine smell disappears.
However, it is not recommended to drink water immediately afterwards. It is advisable to let her stand in the well for a little more. Better yet, submit it for laboratory analysis. If the water meets all regulatory requirements, then you can safely start using it.
