Necessary and unnecessary tools for the grower

  • Dec 24, 2020

Good afternoon, my reader. Growing flowers requires tools. The problem is that the assortment in specialized stores is too wide, and it is not always clear which of it is really necessary, and what is suitable only for a professional florist who is engaged in production ". Therefore, it is worthwhile to understand this issue.

Shovels and scoops

The soil will not sprinkle itself, it is inconvenient to dive with bare hands, and it is also better not to fill in the top dressing with a handful. It is for this purpose that all the numerous hole-formers, shovels and other things that can be found in abundance on store shelves are intended.

Do you need all this? Required. However, by and large, the difference in all these tools is only in the brand, design options, and even in the shape and size of the canvas. So for the garden, you can use old children's scoops, tools cut from plastic bottles, and for houseplants, table or tea forks and spoons.

Cultivators and rakes

Raking debris from the beds, removing foliage, loosening the soil is a must. But can they be replaced with something? Yes:

  • children's rake;
  • a fork (for flower pots);
  • knitting needles;
  • chopsticks, etc.

In an amicable way, for outdoor floriculture, an ordinary garden rake with frequent teeth is enough to break the clods. Even a steel wire tine rake is no longer necessary for trash.

Scissors and secateurs

Cut off dry or diseased shoots, parts of the rhizome during transplantation - all this is necessary. And here you can't do without scissors. But which one to choose depends on the plants that are grown:

  • kitchen and office scissors - for thin green and delicate shoots;
  • secateurs - for roses or hydrangeas;
  • loppers - for flowering shrubs.
A well-honed pruner is a versatile option. He will cope with pruning a room orchid, and removing branches up to 1.5-2 cm thick (if, of course, you have the strength to do this).

Knives

Cross-cutting, cutting off small branches, making drainage into plastic pots - all this is work for a knife. But having a specialized garden knife is not at all necessary - an ordinary household knife with a good sharpening is enough. The variety of shapes and brands is more a marketing job than a necessity.

Sticks and pegs

On store shelves, you can even find special sticks or pegs to make narrow depressions in the soil, small holes, straighten root tips, compact the soil, etc.

Do you need all this? Perhaps only if you have extra money - or if you do it every day and with dozens or hundreds of plants. For a small area or a window sill with pots, a pencil, bamboo sticks from sushi - finally, just a dry twig picked up on the site is enough.

Conclusion

It makes sense to purchase highly specialized tools in two cases:

  1. If you are not sorry for money for your hobby.
  2. If you are monotonous, doing the same things day in and day out, growing flowers for sale.

In all other cases, the old wisdom will help you: "Use what is at hand - and do not look for something else for yourself." With improvised tools and homemade tools, you can work no less efficiently than the most expensive tool from the store.

The main thing is to use everything correctly and not to forget to clean, rinse and disinfect, so as not to spread any of the plant diseases to the beds or pots.
