Is it so necessary to whitewash the trees in the garden
Not at all, if you give your favorite apple tree to be eaten by various pests and microorganisms, and then complain that it bears little fruit. Spring whitewashing of garden plants is an effective and proven way to protect them from pests, as well as from sunburn, which are possible at this time of the year, since the crown protecting from the sun's rays has not yet thickened foliage.
It is customary to whitewash trees in the spring, although experienced gardeners carry out this procedure in the fall. The whitewash material will protect the plants from the effects of low winter temperatures and the formation of an ice crust.
It is necessary to whitewash garden plants in autumn at a certain time - before the arrival of the first frost, having carved out a break between autumn rains. Before whitewashing, the bark of trees should be cleaned (with a brush or even with a gloved hand) from various dirt and dead wood material. All this is then best burned.
Before the autumn whitewashing of trees, it will not be superfluous to disinfect their trunks by spraying with a solution copper sulfate (3-5%) or ash and soap solution prepared from furnace ash and household soap.
What should be included in the whitewash
Today, many gardeners are not even puzzled by this issue and purchase ready-made, already diluted whitewash in hardware stores. However, summer residents, who are seriously keen on gardening, ignore her. Many of them develop their own recipe for making whitewash, using, in addition to the obligatory slaked lime and copper vitriol, even additives such as PVA glue, clay, manure, milk or whey, which increase the degree of "sticking" of the material to tree bark.
Features of spring whitewashing
The exact time when it should be held is difficult to name, since everything will depend on the vagaries of nature. Spring may be early, but it may be late. But usually trees are whitewashed during the transition period between March and April, while insects are still sleeping peacefully under the bark (if whitewashing was not carried out in autumn). Particular attention should be paid to the plants on the leaves of which the ants grow aphids. Whitewashed wood will not interest them.
The recommended whitewashing height is from 1.5 to 2 meters from the ground. It is applied both to the stem and to the skeletal branches. Perform it with a wide paint brush, roller or using a spray gun. Special attention should be paid to the branch points.
Only by paying attention to the garden in the spring, you can count on a rich harvest. In addition, the garden with whitewashed trees looks well-groomed (to the envy of the neighbors), and its appearance inspires the gardener with a sense of accomplishment and mobilizes for further garden work.
